2nd Trimester

Strep B

I called the nurse because I have been having yellow discharge  and a foul odor and she said on my first visit I tested positive for Strep B.  So, I have to take an antobiotic.  I am 19 weeks pregnant. Is anyone familiar with this? She said they normally don't treat you for this until you are ready to deliver unless you have symptoms.

  • Hmm I am not familiar with this.  I am more shocked that they didnt bring you in to confirm that it is not bacterial vaginosis - BV (which is extremely common in pregnancy).  It's possible that the antibiotic would treat both, but I would want to to know.

  • It is no big deal.  Many women just have strep B at any random time and it is usually asymptomatic.  The only time it is a big deal is if you are going to deliver, because it can infect the baby on the way through the vag canal and make the baby sick.  But even that is not a big deal, because they routinely test you for strep after 36 weeks, and if you are positive you get antibiotics during labor and delivery to protect the baby.
  • what abx did they trat you with
  • They treated me with Clindese.  It is a vagnial cream.
