I feel like everyone is getting NSTs...

Everyone keeps talking about NSTs, weekly NST, been having NST for weeks already, etc....

I only got one NST with DD and it was when I went past my due date. I am assuming I won't get one with this one either, unless I go late.

For those of you getting them already/weekly - would you mind sharing why? Is it a medical necessity or something your doc just does?

I'm sort of jealous, I'd love an excuse to just lay down and do nothing for a while!

Re: I feel like everyone is getting NSTs...

  • I just got two in the last couple of weeks due to high BP. They aren't scheduled or anything, just checking on baby when I came in for BP.

  • My doctor is doing them because my baby is on the small side (like under 10%).

I get a weekly NST and BPP because of my GD.

ETA: my LO is also measuring 6 weeks ahead.

I am having NSTs and BPPs twice weekly. I am having contractions every 3-5 minutes for the last two weeks. So just checking that he is handling the stress well. So far so good.

    Same.

How do you know that? Are they doing growth scans to determine that? Just curious because I was talking to someone this weekend to had those, but my doctor has never even discussed them. My last can was at 24 weeks (return AS). Did they determine the baby was small at that time?

  • I had my first one today, scheduled to have one a week until this LO arrives.  I'm getting them because of a GD Dx, no other reason.  It's really not terribly exciting - of course it's awesome to hear the heartbeat for an extended period of time and hear Baby moving around, but you basically just lay there with monitors on your belly that record baby's heart rate from anywhere to 10 minutes to an hour, basically waiting for LO to squirm around.  They want 2 periods of activity where LO's HR is elevated for more than 15 seconds (i.e., Baby is squiggling around lots, which elevates the HR).

For growth monitoring, they pick up on it at your 20 wk ultrasound or fundal height measurement I believe. Not an MD though, can anyone else verify?

I'm starting my weekly NST's and BPP's tomorrow! I get them for a blood clotting disorder! So if you also want to give your self 2 shots in the belly a day of heparin then you can totes get the extra scans too!

ETA - I meant this to come off in a joking way, but rereading it seemed snarky! Not my intention! This is why you shouldn't bump and do other things....lol

  • I had a NST and BPP due to lack of baby movement about 6 weeks ago and a BPP last week(due to bleeding/cramping).

My baby is on the small side too, a specialist has been following her since 23 weeks, he measures everything and charts it, he says she was 3-6%, if she fell any lower on the curve and she wasn't growing they would take her out. At 32 weeks she was weighing in at 3lbs 10 ounces, I know it's just and estimate. They said. He vital organs were getting nutrients, and her brain stem was at. 32 weeks. Going back next week at 35 weeks to see if she has made progress!
  • I have a BPP and complete OB US with measurements bi-weekly because of my gestational hypertension
I only had one NST when I first got the diagnosis and was told I would have one any time I started contracting (which really was only once for just an hour and a half so I didn't go in)

  • I have GD and my BP tends to act a little funny! I'm 34 weeks and I'll be do NST weekly until the baby arrives!
  • I get weekly BPPs due to high blood pressure. If he doesn't score an 8 on the ultrasound, I have to do the NST.

  • I get NSTs 2x a week since 33 weeks due to Type 2 Diabetes.  I only get a BPP if they have difficulty keeping her on the monitor.  So I had 2 NSTs last week and two BPP (one was for the lack of monitor for the NST and the other was because I had a minor car accident and they wanted to check her).

  • I didn't get them when I was overdue with my son. My doctors said unless I stopped feeling movement or the heart rate decreased, they didn't do it.

I hate going. I originally had to start at the high risk place because of my age (I'm only 35...but ok). Then it was because of my history with pre-eclampsia...I had it before and they found protein in my urine. Now my amniotic fluid is on the high side...so it's just another reason. I have to go every week....it's not as awesome as you'd think

  • I am over 40 and was told they automatically do them twice weekly because of that. I have no other issues other than advanced maternal age, though.

  • I get the BPP with estimated weight and NST weekly due to GD as well. To be honest, you're not missing out on much. I always have to lay on my side and hold the monitor because because baby likes to squirm so much that we lose the signal and have to start over.... I find the NST more of a PITA and just another weekly appointment that I have to attend. At first it had the cool factor being able to see baby at the BPP and being able to listen to the heartbeat at the NST, but by the 4th appointment, not much really changes.

  • I have been going bi-weekly since 34 weeks because I have a higher risk of pregnancy complications (like IUGR, pre-e & PTL) due to epilepsy. I've managed to avoid those complications so far. I go to make sure LO is doing well, but I find it stressful and I'd prefer if it wasn't something I *had* to do.
  • I have to go twice a week for GD. I also go in once a week for sugar checks. The NSTs are only done on Mondays and Thursdays. Sugar checks are only done on Tuesdays. I'm so sick of having to go in all the time, but it's becoming routine now.
  • I have been going 2x weekly at 30 weeks due to low amniotic fluids. It has gone back to the normal range but since it was measured being low at 30 weeks, I have to keep going back until I give birth. They also do an ultrasound everytime to measure the amniotic fluids.

  • High BP & SUA.  I'm in 2x/week to the Dr & biophysical profiles & NSTs once/week.  Again, not as awesome as you'd think.

Exactly. I get anxiety before every test and I get them twice a week.
  • I do them twice a week b/c I'm considered high-risk due to being preggo with twins.
