Party Food Help!

W's party is this Saturday and we were planning to BBQ since historically it's only rained on this date 1 out of the past 15 years. Well it's looking like a 70% chance of rain, so now I need to figure out what to make for a main dish to feed 30-40 people. I'll keep all the sides/desserts the same, but no clue what to make for that many people. Not to mention that now I have to figure out how to have that many people inside our house.

Re: Party Food Help!

  • What are the side dishes? And will you BBQ even if it's raining?

  • No, we are not going to BBQ now, which is why I need help to come up with something different. We are doing a semi rainbow theme with lots of bright colors. Food so far is a rainbow veggie tray, rainbow fruit skewers, several colors of chocolate dipped oreos, a pretty good sized candy bar and jones sodas in various colors. Oh, and cupcakes and cake for W.
  • We have a bbq place by our house that does meat by the pound for really cheap. I would just do that, some brisket and chicken.

If you want to keep with the colorful theme though, you could do a taco bar. Have bunch of shredded chicken in the crock pot and diced veggies for toppings - tomato, purple onion, peppers, avocado, cheese.

  • Tacos bars are pretty easy and offer a lot of variety.

Otherwise - what about BBQ chicken/pork/beef sandwiches.  We've done shredded bbq chicken & pork previously & it's pretty easy to make in the crockpot ahead of time & keep warm.

    Good luck!

P.S. We're planning burgers/brats on the grill and I'm already nervous it might be cold.  I hope it doesn't rain by us next Saturday!

I was going to say this.

tomatoes, cheddar cheese, yellow peppers, avocado, black beans (they can look blueish), purple onions
Good idea! I might need to set up an extra table or something to put all of the toppings on since we will be pretty limited on counter space with all of the other food. Dumb rain.
  • We're doing pulled BBQ chicken in the crock pot with whole wheat rolls as our main dish. Easy and good!

This is delish and super easy just add BBQ sauce and buns.

I think the taco bar is a great idea.

  • I'm doing a burrito bar for dd, but was going to suggest pulled pork in the crockpot. You could also do pinwheel sandwiches by rolling fillings in lavash from Trader Joe's. It's easy to get good colors and it was cheap. I don't have other brilliant ideas, but it rained for ds' third birthday and we had to move it to our house. It was super crowded, but it worked fine. You'll do great.

  • I was going to recommend the crockpot pulled pork too!

  • Oh man, now I'm totally torn. I like the simplicity of doing pulled pork/chicken, but the colors for the taco bar would go really well with our theme. I may be leaning toward the crockpot idea since it will take up a lot less counter space.
  • We're doing chili - one veggie, one meat - with a toppings bar. I was going to do a taco bar but chili in the crockpot sounded easier. Oh, and sweet potatoes and regular potatoes.

  • My response is a little late but...We had DS bday party this past weekend and we did a variety sandwich tray from Target and it was absolutely great.  Plus no hard work for me.  The large tray feeds 16-20.  And the wiches are huge so in reality it feeds waaay more than that.

  • I'm late too, but I have two thoughts.  We're doing shredded turkey sandwiches (my fave), but if you really wanted to BBQ, could you grill out ahead of time.  My family has done that and served them in beer in a crockpot, so that they stay moist.  That was going to be my other choice for our party this weekend, but I think the turkey will be cheaper to feed 50+ at our party!
