Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Sleep issues

DS is 20 months old and for the last 2 weeks or so, he has been crying frequently at night. Sometimes he wakes up, but most of the time he stays asleep. We often have to go in and give him his pacifier and then he is fine but it happens A LOT. He does talk in his sleep sometimes and his dad used to talk in his sleep when he was little and have night terrors, so I'm wondering if DS could be having bad dreams. They don't seem to be night terrors but I can't imagine he is having bad dreams every night?? He doesn't have an ear infection and I don't think it's teething. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced anything like this. We are exhausted dealing with it as we are woken up every time he cries.

Re: Sleep issues

  • Is it a developmental milestone maybe? I know that whenever C is mastering something new, she has a week or two of disrupted sleep.  It happened before crawling, walking, and right now she's in the middle of it I think for talking.

It could also be dreams.  We put a nightlight in C's room and she's been up a lot less lately.

  • We've been having this - not as early as 20 months, but right around 22 months.  He just started waking up at night crying.  He's able to be comforted, so I don't think it fits the classic definition of night terrors, but I still think it's bad dreams.  He talks in his sleep, and often before he wakes crying he'll be saying something like "no" "no wanny" or "stop."

I don't trust that he really knows what's going on, but one night before he woke crying he was saying "mama I did it!."  So the next morning I asked what he did and he said "couch" which usually means jumping on the couch.  I asked why he then started crying and he pointed to the floor and said "owie" so maybe he was jumping on the couch and fell off in his dream?  Again, who knows with toddlers whether this is really what was going on.
