Brown spotting at 5w5d. Should I be worried?

I am 5 weeks and 5 days pregnant with my first. I had some brown discharge today when I wiped. It had two small twinges of brown mucus. Should I be worried?? I haven't had sex with the hubby since I found out I was pregnant at 4 weeks because I got some cramping and doc said to hold off until we were a little further along. I haven't had an ultrasound since I was 4 weeks either. I mention this because I know those things can cause bleeding. Anyone have the same experience and have everything be ok?

  • You can have spotting or bleeding early on, and still be perfectly ok. I have heard that brown blood is old, unshed uterus lining sometimes. Best of luck, stay positive, momma!!

  • I had some spotting early on too, I'm now 12 weeks & all is good :o) sometimes it just happens....like previous post said its normally just old blood coming away :o)
  • I'm almost 6 wks and have experienced the same type of discharge. I've heard it's normal and I'm trying to stay positive and not worry (worrying adds stress on our little one;). Keep us updated!!
  • I had the same thing for about a week from 5w1d-6w1d.  It was only a small amount and only sometimes when I wipe, never any spotting on a pantyliner.  I went to my OB for an exam because honestly, it really freaked me out.  She only did a digital exam and saw that my cervix was still closed.  The discharge stopped a few days later.  I had my first official appointment at almost 8 weeks and saw the fetal pole and a healthy heartbeat!

From my understanding, brown discharge is old blood and is usually normal.  I think that as long as you aren't bleeding heavily and/or severe cramping it's safe to assume that all is well.  I completely understand how nerve wrecking it can be but I'm sure everything is fine. GL!
  • As long as it is not bright red, or accompanied by cramping or pain, you should be ok.  Brown blood is old blood.

I'm 6w4d and have been spotting since week 2 (I thought I had my period!) but I had an U/S at 5 and 6 weeks and everything looks good <knock on wood!> so I'm just trying to take it day by day.  Usually it's just when I wipe, very little on a pantyliner.

It is very stressful but try not to worry too much. :-)  I had a coworker that bled for 4 months and delivered a healthy girl!
  • Hi there, I've had the brown spotting for almost 3 weeks now (pretty much started right after I got my BFP). I am seeing a Fertility Specialist since I'm 37, but she tells me at every appt. that it's ok unless it increases, turns red, or I have bad cramping. We have another ultrasound scheduled for next Monday (8 weeks) and I can't wait. We did see the heartbeat last Friday (6w 4days) and that helped relieve a lot of my anxiety.
