Birthday Parties

need ideas for tween birthday party that includes little ones

My sister and I need help coming up with a theme for my niece's 11th birthday. Normally this would be an easy task. But this year my sister is inviting extended family to the party (our cousins and their kids). Half the kids at the party will be boys in the 3-6 age group. We're trying to come up with a theme that can include the boys. The only thing that I could think of was a safari theme with hot pink and animal prints for decor and some explorer toys for the boys. My sister didn't like the idea. Any suggestions? I'm drawing a blank.

  • My two cents: I would definitely definitely definitely let the 11-year-old pick her own theme. It's her birthday after all, and "expressing your individuality" is so important at that age. But then, just pick games/activities that everybody will enjoy.

  • Yeah, I hear what ya'll are saying. I said as much to my sister. So here is the thing...for her birthday my niece wants a sleepover with friends. And she is getting that. But my sister still wants to do a family party. She asked my niece what theme she'd like and she said she doesn't care. I think part of it has to do with her older brother teasing her about having a "little kid party." I told my sister the party didn't need to have a theme. But my sister is insisting on doing something. I just had a Jedi birthday party for my eldest last month. We gave out Jedi cloaks and lightsabers and had Jedi training. The family and kids loved it and are still talking about it. So now my sister wants to do something just as special (I guess that's the right word).  A little sibling rivalry going on here? Probably. She wants something that will top my party and wants me to help.
  • A friend of mine threw a boy/girl party for her two kids that was super hero themed. Everyone wore a cape and a mask in a variety of colors. They had a photo booth and super hero themed games. It was "super" cute!

  • When is her birthday?  If the weather is nice enough do a "messy party".  Get everyone in white tees and old pants and fill water balloons with dye.  Then, MASSIVE balloon fight.  There are also a lot of ways to incorporate that into an obstacle course or other games.
