help!- poosplosion

I have been using prefolds and covers- mostly thirsties- since DS was 10 days old, and I love them. The past week or so, ( he is 11 weeks now) almost every single time he poops it shoots strait out the back of the cover, and if it doesn't come all the way out, it at least gets stopped by the elastic of the cover, so the cover needs to be washed and can't be re-used.
DS is 11 weeks, 12.5-/13 lbs, and almost 25 in long. He is not super chunky, but long. He wears bummis prefolds- infant size, and thirsties covers, size one on the highest rise and second tightest waist snap.
Why did this start happening all of a sudden?  Do I need to switch to size two for a higher rise? Are his covers too small, or are they not tight enough?
TIA

  • 1st: Poop happens. 2nd: maybe you're ready for a bigger cover? My biggest concern was always having the leg holes be snug enough (double gussets are awesome). I now use Best Bottoms and I'm very happy.

  • What fold have you been using? If you have any extra rise in the prefold, you could try folding it over in the back (toward his back) as a poo catcher. The waist should be snug enough that you can just fit a couple of fingers in the waistband. When they go through growth spurts, sometimes you have to use an odd number of snaps to get a good fit. (So instead of two snaps showing, there would only be one perhaps.) It makes my OCD side a bit crazy, but it's better than poo leaks!

1, I am okay with the occasional leak, but not every time!
2, I am going to have to try moving up, but I am afraid the leg fit is not quite right.

I have tried both things and still poo leaks! I am going to keep folding the back inwards though

  • I know it may be counter-intuitive, but have you tried making the rise shorter?  When I had ds in prefolds w/Thirsties duo wraps size 1 (up to 4 months and 11 lbs) the highest rise setting he used was on the middle setting and the only leaks I had were the pee leaks at the end when he outgrew the prefolds.

  • Hmmm...could your prefold be a little too tight or flat to his bottom? I'm not sure what would combat this except maybe using a fold that would make a poo pocket, like the jelly roll or the bikini twist.

  • My first thought with a long-ish 13-lb baby is that he is outgrowing both the prefolds and the covers.

Infant prefolds are sized 7-15 lb, but DD started outgrowing them at about 13 lbs. And while the tag on the Duo size 1 covers says they fit to 18 lb, I've heard they don't make it quite that long for many babies. Poo leaks can happen if the rise on the dipe/cover is too short (the same thing happens with sposies).
