Carseat head supports

Our carseat doesn't come with a good head support so we are trying to figure out if we should buy one? Some people just say use blankets because they aren't safe. I'm having twins so they will be smaller than average babies so I feel like we need something. Did anyone purchase them?

Re: Carseat head supports

  • We used the JJ cole one last time because we had a 5 lb baby.  We used it for the first about 3 months because he was so small.

  • I know it doesn't look comfortable to us, but the RFing recline should be all the neck support LOs need. All car seats pass the same national safety standard tests. Some of the car seat manufacturers go on to add the side impact wings, but those are for crash safety. They aren't really made to just keep LOs head in place. In fact, they don't until LO is older and larger. Don't add aftermarket stuff and just rest assured they will be fine and plenty comfortable without additional "support."

  • We were told at our classes that anything extra is not good, but they also said that if there were two exceptions it would be for for twins or premature babies due to their size. They weren't recommending them, but those were examples of times when parents might want to consider them.
  • The tiny triplets and tiny twins I knew bought smaller car carriers for their little ones. Maybe something to consider. My snugride 30 is much smaller than the 35.

  • I've been told that the aftermarket stuff is not okay, at all, but if you absolutely need something, a rolled up blanket to either side is acceptable.  Nothing behind the head, though.

  • I hadnt registered for any additional neck support besides what was provided from the carseat but got a little green half doughnut looking thing (people have them on flights too) that the mother's at the shower swore their use so now I need to look into it more as well.
