Is it a "Lie"?

I had my first OB appt last week and took the afternoon off work for a "dentist appointment". Well little did I know that our LO would measure 2 weeks earlier than I thought we were. (7w3d vs 5w5d). So go figure the dr wanted to see me again the following week to get another measurement. So I have ANOTHER OB appointment this week on Thursday that I was not able to schedule myself off for. I am a retail store manager. I don't want to lie to my employees/boss, but all I can think of to tell them (with help from my MIL) is that I have an appointment with an allergy specialist. When they all find out next month that I'm KU, do you think they will be unhappy that I lied?

Re: Is it a "Lie"?

  • I really don't think it is any of their business, say what you need to say and if they get all butthurt that is their problem. I usually say Ian seeing a specialist.

  • I agree with @ Serenia I think if you say a doctor appointment it's not really their business what it's about, so it's not really a lie cause you are going to the dr.

  • I'm with ^^

I'm a manager and don't ever expect my employees to tell me specifics, if you need time off or have an appointment you do, it's none of my business unless its something serious that I would need to know about. For instance I had an employee who had stage 4 breast cancer.

I think you should be able to say you need off for an appointment and call it a day. If they push, it's none of their business and you're protected by law to not have to disclose that information.

  • ITA with PP.  I wouldn't "lie", I would just omit the reason for your appointment

  • I guess my biggest concern is that I work with a small staff of 6 people in my store and they are all male. I got married about 18 months ago and I just really don't want them to guess or speculate that I'm pregnant until I announce. I'm a FTM.
  • Just say you have a doctors appointment.

  • I wouldn't even tell them you have a dr. appointment. I would just say that I have an appointment at this day at this time and I will need that time off. You don't owe your employer an explanation. I wouldn't lie and say it is a dentist, because that trust will be broken when they do find out.

  • You're over thinking this. "I have next Thursday off" is perfectly sufficient for your employees.
  • Just tell them you have a doctor's appointment.  Most people shouldn't be nosy enough to ask -- and most men know there are all kinds of "female" appointments that they know better than to ask about (annuals, etc).  If anyone presses for info, just say "I am seeing a specialist for a minor medical issue, and would prefer not to get into specifics."  That should stop any more questions.

    I definitely wouldn't lie.

  • I was in a very similar position last week and although I only needed 1/2 hour off, I felt like my only option was to call out sick for the whole day. I felt bad about it, but everything worked out and I doubt anyone will remember when I announce in two weeks. Good luck! I know it's frustrating.
  • You don't need to tell them what kind of appt, just say appt or medical appt. Then it's not a lie. But fwiw I lie at work - I had a dentist appt.
