FTM & STM: C-section birth plan

I had a breastfeeding class today and they very briefly discussed birth plans and suggested having one for even a c-section; I hadn't thought of this and am now looking for resources. Do any of you have one from a previous birth that you would like to share or do any FTM have one or a resource for one they would recommend?

  • I never would have thought of this being a c/s my only request is baby gets skin to skin ASAP with my husband if I can't.
  • Loading the player...
  • I have certain preferences like an epidural as opposed to a spinal; sitting up until I puke before they strap me down....epis always make me vomit ugh....and things like that. It's my third so I'm a little pickier now.
  • I wrote one out for my first (who was a scheduled bc she was breech) but just had it for reference to tell my OB before we started. The second time I just told her, this time will be the same. My "plan" was just my preferences like:
I don't want my arms strapped down
    Stitches instead of staples
Give baby to my DH and have him lay baby on my chest after the initial check up and baby stays there while they finish sewing me up.
Bring baby to recovery right away, baby stays with me the whole time.
Remove catheter ASAP so I can get walking and moving ASAP (I had to make sure to have the dr not write "orders" for a 24 hour cath or the nurses will not remove it until they get an ok)
All of these things were fine and I will have them all again this time.

Exactly this. This will be csect 3 for me. Last time the OR recovery room on the LD floor was full and I got sent to general surgery recovery on a seperate floor and the baby wasn't allowed off LD. I got to see ds for 1 minute and then not again for 2 hours. I was pissed!

  • If I have a RCS my only request will be that the catheter be placed AFTER i am numb.

  • Only that baby stays with me as much as possible, and I get to try to breast feed in the recovery room... If baby can't be with me DH goes with. Also, epidural instead of spinal.
  • Has anyone thought about asking their provider if you can have more than 1 person/coach/family member in the OR with you? I'm thinking that if baby needs to go elsewhere to get cleaned up and examined, I want DH to go with him, but that that leave me all alone in the OR as the docs finish up. I'm thinking I would want someone else with me. Anyone else?

I'm pretty sure you're only allowed 1 person in the OR with you during a regular/routine c/s. In emergency cases they typically don't allow anyone in with you.

  • My c-section with my son was unplanned and urgent due to severe pre-e. It was a pretty scary experience for me, so I've discussed a plan with my OB to make this experience better.

These are all contingent on everyone being healthy & safe at delivery.

To have a mirror put up and the curtain lowered so I can watch as they take the baby out.
To have skin to skin and nurse as soon as possible.
To have the catheter removed as soon as possible so I can start getting up and around.
To have the baby within sight of me or DH at all times.
    No formula.

5th time Csection. I know how this hospital does things, and I am ok with that.  I request is the LC be available at some point before she goes home the first day. I know she sometimes does not make it till day 2. My nipples are a little desensitized anymore, so I like to see the LC right away.

My hospital does not do Epi's for Csections. That is fine. I have had spinals. I know to request that they do NOT attempt the smaller needle. I am prone to the spinal headaches so they like to try that first. Has never worked and always get stuck with a larger one. So no small needle.

Out side of that, Only my one arm gets strapped down, The baby is put on my chest already right away, and they take her to do their things after a few minutes. She is waiting for me in recovery where I get immediate skin to skin with her.

I will be requesting no visitors except my kids until 4:00pm. I only have one family member that it is an issue with. So it is really directed at her. I am a morning Csection and my older 2 get out of school at 3:30pm. No one but the one person will be to the hospital before 4:30pm anyway, so it just works out that the kids will see the baby first... and then grandpa and all of them. I am just not a fan of a packed room and well, my kids and their caregiver and daughter already makes my room full. So.... That and we wanted to let grandparents know the sex before it was common knowledge... said family member has a good heart but a huge mouth.

  • My c-section w/ #1 was not planned and was very much the opposite of everything I HAD planned. But my hospital/OB were awesome and I was allowed to breastfeed in the OR while getting stitched up, they had an extra nurse/midwife in the OR specifically to help me with it.  Then they wheeled me & baby into recovery together and eventually on to our room together (in the same bed, he never left my arms, except to go to my husband, mom, etc., they were allowed in recovery with me).  Not all hospitals/doctors are that accommodating but it never hurts to ask!
My big boy is bounding towards 4! Baby brother coming in October!

I guess it will depend on your hospital, I asked and was given approval for my husband and my father to be permitted in the OR at the same time if an emergency c is needed.

    This is my plan too.

That's true. I delivered at a military hospital, and their policy is one family member during routine a routine c/s and no family allowed during an emergency c/s.

  • Talk to your OB about his/her policies and those of the hospital as well before you make a plan. Staples vs stitches? I didn't have a choice. My OB did stitches--which I was happy about, but I dont think I had a choice in that one at all.
