HELP! Local Anesthesia Advice

In need of some counsel. My son is getting circumcised tomorrow.. Long story short I had an emergency C section at a different hospital than where I was planning to have him. The Dr. who delivered him didn't want to perform it seeing as I wasn't a regular patient. I was furious.

I'm most likely going to lose sleep over trying to decide on whether or not to allow local anesthesia.. knowing there are risks.

Advice would be SO appreciated!

Re: HELP! Local Anesthesia Advice

  • We didn't circ, but if we had there is no way I would have done it without local anesthesia. In my opinion, if I wouldn't let a dr cut me without it, there is no way I'd let him cut my son without it.

  • That's where my heart lies.. I'm just a tad nervous about risks. It just breaks my heart even thinking about all of it.
  • DS got local plus 3 doses of Tylenol, 1 every 4 hours

Does it feel hard or wrong? Does it feel hard like watching LO get shots? Or does it feel wrong as in "this isnt what is best for my son"?  Only you can make that call.

Absolutely I would go with local anesthetic.

  • There is no medical procedure w/out risk. Doing it without local seems hardcore to me. If they can numb the area then hell yes.

This just made my night. ^
  • My LO's Ped was telling me how reactions can occur from the anesthesia, or how he still can feel it anyway and it ends up making it a little more difficult for him once it wears off.. Plus that there could be nerve damage.

I've flirted with the idea of foregoing it altogether.. But the risks of him getting UTI's and hygiene won me over..

It's just the whole process that breaks my heart. With EBF, keeping my diet ultra clean, and skipping certain vaccines for now like Hep B.. I'm trying my best to do what's best for him. I cried in the hospital when he was first born and they have to prick their little heels.. Who knew you could know love like this.

Ultimately I read waaay too much, and it just psyches me out.
  • Just had DS circumcised on Friday and I would never do it without the local. Honestly the risks of the procedure itself was more worrisome than the pain relief. I think it would be too painful for them w/out it. I had stitches on a 3rd degree tear and would have died if I didn't get local anesthesia!
I would also suggest staying out of the room during the procedure. That is if they let you in the room anyways.

  • When my baby had it done they numbed the area and gave him sugar water to distract him. He was def in some pain for the rest of the day & we gave him some tylonal. Baby
Slept alot and wasn't interested in eating, just wanted to snuggle. I definatly cried that day and felt so bad for him hurting but after a week it's all healed and you both forget all about it

Thank you for this! It's so comforting.

After a long sleepless night, (on my part) and with all of your help.. I've def decided on local.

Now it's time to take a deep breath and head on over to his Urologist' office. Pray for this Mamma and baby! Haha, and thank you all!
  • I have no idea what my dr did. She took him to the nursery, did it and brought a sleepy boy back to me. I just nursed him often and he was pretty calm

This is what the doctor did for my twins. Neither cried and they didn't even notice what was going on with having the sugar water distraction. They didn't seem to be bothered after either so we didn't end up using any Tylenol, we just kept the area covered in gobs of A&D ointment.

FTR getting circ'd doesn't guarantee no UTIs, and hygiene is more about being gross or not - it has nothing to do with the circ.

I find it ironic that you are so upset about giving your LO shots and getting his heel pricked, but you're totally OK with cutting his genitals.  Just doesn't seem to match for me.

If you're going to do it, give him the pain meds.
