This is somewhat of a spin off of the workout thread, but I was actually thinking about this even before the workout thread...
If you are counting calories or using myfitnesspal, how many calories are you consuming or making your target? I would especially like to hear your answers if you are (like me) someone who is on the upper end of a healthy weight or above.
Over the past year since having #1, I have lost 50 pounds. I am now only about 5 lbs above the upper "healthy" weight range for my height. By body fat percentage, I'm probably at the upper end of healthy. I really do not want to have another pregnancy where I pack on the pounds again. Of course, I realize that some of this is out of my control, but to the extent I can control it, I would like to.
Here is my question/issue: Everything I read suggests that in the first tri, we should be consuming 2200 calories per day. This seems excessive to me. Especially for the first part of the first tri. Right now, I'm not even 5 weeks and my little bean isn't even the size of a bean and won't bean for some time. I can see this "estimate" being good for women who are underweight or on the low end of the healthy weight range as they probably need the extra reserves/fat stores going into pregnancy and, for some, motherhood/breastfeeding. But for those of us who already have plenty of reserves, this just seems like a lot. Based on my experience losing weight and just general knowledge I have acquired over the years, I know enough about my body to know that if I start eating 2200 calories per day, I am going to gain about a pound a week. Based on what I have read, this is the recommended weight gain for 3rd tri...not first tri. This will would probably put me up by about 10 lbs going into second tri. Again, this seems excessive for someone who has a little extra weight to begin with.
Any thoughts? What are you doing?
I plan to ask my new OB about this, but I won't see him for another couple of weeks. In my first pregnancy, my OB's concern was only that I not loose weight. She never seemed concern with either extra weight gain or even with no weight gain (even into the 3rd tri). The only time she ever expressed concern was when I had lost weight between appointments...which I could see.

If I put my fitnesspal app onthe setting to keep my weight the same, I will probably gain. When I have it on a 2 lbs per week weight loss, I usually only lose about 1 pound. I don't know if it overestimates the calories I need (or overestimates the calories I burn working out) or if I underestimate the calories I eat. I definitely think it overestimates the calories I burn working out because it will tell me that I burn like 700-800 calories doing zubma for an hour and I know from my heart rate monitor that that number is closer to about 400-500. Similarly, when I am on the elliptical, it usually overestimates the calories I burn by about 30-40 percent.
So, for now, I have it on a 1 pound per week weightloss which puts me eating a little under 1600 calories per day. I also try to eat most of the calories I burn working out.
Really, my goal for the first tri is just not to gain weight...which seems based on what others are saying seems to be a reasonable goal.
