Babysitters

We have yet to leave DD with a babysitter. A few times my sister in law has taken care of her so DH and I could go out but DD was already asleep for the night and my SIL doesn't live by us so we can only do that when she visits. I don't know any teenagers well enough to ask them and I don't really know how to go about finding a good sitter. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. DH and I need a grown up evening or two out of the house.

Re: Babysitters

  • Number one tip: when you find someone good, pay them well, so they will never leave you!! Now to find someone good, if you have any colleges nearby, I know a lot of people put up flyers in the early childhood development buildings. Or, you could ask the girls who work at your gym daycare if they do outside babysitting. Or you can always ask friends without children to come over. They usually enjoy the novelty of it when it's very occasional. They may or may not accept payment, but I would offer and at the very least provide dinner!

  • Ask your friends first (with and without kids).  The ones with kids may have recommendations.  The ones without may watch for you (as PP suggested).  That's where we started and have had success.  Otherwise, I've seen other people say they've had luck with care.com.
  • If your LO is in daycare try asking around with the teachers. That's who we have now and love it. Otherwise try care.com. You can do a background check and check references. Do some practice runs while he/she plays with LO while you do things around the house.
  • I use my boss's daughter.  She's 17 and awesome.  Other than that, if I need a backup, I ask at daycare.  That way she's with someone she's already comfortable with.

  • You could ask your co-workers who may have kids around the same age if they have any recommendations.  You could also ask co-workers who have kids in baby-sitting ranges.  Do you go to church?  Are there teenagers in the neighborhood?  I would also ask your daycare teachers.  I've had good luck with the older teachers' teenage kids being good babysitters.

It's hard to find good ones.  We're lucky to live in between 2 teenage girls who love kids, but at first it's tough!  And I agree with pp who says to pay them good.  It's totally worth the money to us since we don't go out very often.

  • Do you have any friends that use a daycare center? I found several adult women who like to sit for extra income from our daycare center. I have revommended them to families who don't use the center as well.
  • I think we're going to try Care.Com. DD goes to daycare but her teachers have LO's of their own and don't babysit outside of work.
