Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Formula Intake for 5 month old

How much formula is your 5 month old drinking in a 24 hour period? I'm guessing my DD weighs about 16 1/2-17 pounds now (haven't seen the dr. since her 4 mo. check) and is currently doing seven 4 oz. bottles/day. She is in child care and her providers say she seems fussier than normal the past few days. I increased her bottles to 5 oz. today and she is doing well with that. My concerns is if she continues to take 7 bottles/day, that 35 oz. of formula in a day is a lot for someone that small. She doesn't do any solids yet and we'll like to BLW at 6 months, so it will be a bit before she starts those. Thoughts?

Re: Formula Intake for 5 month old

  • That sounds about what my almost 5 month old is taking in. We do no solids too. Babies can be unpredictable at times, you just go with it and follow hunger cues. As long as she is gaining properly I wouldn't be to worried.

  • My 5 mo does 34 or 35 oz per day and she is prob about that weight. I asked pedi because the "recommended" max is 32. She said it was fine.
  • Our pedi says anything over 32 ounces a day can cause baby to get too chubby.
  • LOL. If your baby is hungry for 35oz, you give 35oz. That's it.

As for us, DS has been chugging down approximately 36oz a day since he was 4months old. Sometimes he only takes 4oz per bottle. The next day his 6oz per bottle aren't enough. He wants either 6 times 6oz or 5 times 8oz. He does get solids once in a while because 40oz is really the maximum of milk a baby should have per 24h period.

Given that he's 95th percentile for height and only 75th for weight, I'm not worried, Pedi isn't worried, baby is happy and so is mama.

  • My 4 month old drinks 30 oz/day. When we started upping the amount, he dropped some of the feedings so it all evened out if that makes sense. He now drinks 4-5 bottles/day, 6-8 oz/bottle (it varies, but he's never drank more than 33 oz, pedi said that's fine and that if he's consistently drinking 35+ that its time for solids).
  • My daughter will be 5 months in just over a week and we are still doing 5 oz bottles 5 times a day, so 25 oz total.  Sometimes I have to work with her to even get all of that down.  She is in the 98th percentile for height and 77th for weight so I'm not too concerned.  At her 4 month checkup she was just over 15 lbs.
  • My son does about 28 oz a day, plus oatmeal cereal twice per day and 2 oz of vegetables once per day.  And he's long and super skinny.
  • My daughter will be 6 months at the end of the month and drinks 30 oz in a day plus gets oatmeal and a fruit or veg 2x a day.  She has 5 bottles of 6oz.
  • My daughter is 5 months (23weeks) and she takes 7 4ounce bottles a day on the rare occasion she will take an 8th bottle. So she is between 28-32 ounces. She also just started cereal and right now takes about a tablespoon 2x's a day and that will increase to a max of 3-5 tablespoons 2x's a day.My dr said the average for this age is 6 5 ounce bottles a day=30 ounces. But because my daughter likes t eat more frequently we have stayed at the 4 ounce bottles if we go up to 5 or 6 ounces she would be eating to much. The 4 ounce bottles has worked great for us however I am thinking of making her last bottle 5-6 ounces because she use to get up for a nighttime feeding at around 5am now its like 1-2am so I think she needs more in the last bottle.
