Multiples

New twins/trips mom

We just found out on Tuesday that we're expecting multiples. It looks like the odds are that it'll just be twins, but there is a shot that we could end up with trips still (one has a low heartbeat).

I'm pretty scared...and I'm sure you get this all the time, but I'd love some "you can do 4u5!" and maybe some "I carried twins to at least 35 weeks after a preemie" and/or "I had a couple C-sections before my twins and it was fine!" because that's mostly what I'm scared of. I'm hopeful on the preemie thing, my preemie was my first and my water broke at 33w6d, then we found out she was IUGR and in distress, but we never got a reason for it, but then my second was actually born at 40w by repeat C-section at nearly 8lbs, so I'm thinking maybe it'll be OK? I don't know, really I'm just still trying to get my bearings.

  • My first (singleton) came early at 35 weeks but had a short NICU stay for breathing issues. Not anything like what you experienced but with him I started going into labor and 21 weeks and was 5 cm diliated and 80% effaced by 30 weeks. This pregnancy (twins) my cervix has stayed good MUCH better than with the past baby. It's shortened (but not very much) so I have to take it easy and I get length checks every two weeks but now at almost 26 weeks I am not effaced at all and no dilation so in my personal experience each pregnancy singleton vs multiple it can vary SO much my twin pregnancy is much easier going than my singleton. Also I would like to share with you one of my twins had almost no heartbeat it was low around 68 bpm and no fluid in his sac at all it continued to be that way until almost the second trimester when things magically turned around. They told me he would vanish over and over again,. He is now my biggest baby and is my most active so things can turn around and go well for baby #3!! Congrats on your babies. Prayers for a very long boring uneventful and healthy pregnancy!!

  • Congratulations and welcome to the board! I don't have preemie experience of 4u5 experience but I know MoMs who do and from knowing you, I believe that while it won't be easy, that you'll find your groove and will be an amazing MoM! Do you have many family/friends around who can help you out in the beginning?

That's awesome to hear that your pregnancy is going well despite having a preemie singleton! I think that's the scariest part for me right now, the NICU thing SUCKS - my DD was only 3lb12oz, and it scares me to think of another teeny tiny baby like that again.

Not really :( I'm sure my MIL will come stay with us, but that's always kind of a love/hate thing. It's tough having people in your house 24/7, ya know? And I always kind of wish it was my mom (but she works, so that's not an option). I'm hoping we can pull off a move closer to family sometime in the 2nd tri.

  • I can't speak for experience with 4u5 but I too had a preemie at 35 weeks...literaly almost to the hour. He didn't have a NICU stay. But this pregnancy I am getting shots of a hydroxyprogestrone called Makena. It is supposed to help relax your uterus so it can't contract and cause dilation. I get the shots weekly from 16-36 weeks. It may be something you can talk to your doctor about. I also get monthly cervical length checks. So far they have been 3.4-3.9 and it has actually lengthened over time!! Welcome and good luck! Fingers crossed for baby c and that they all stay in there until they are healthy enough to come out!

We actually talked about that for baby no. 2, but we decided I didn't need it since it's more for PTL than what happened in my case. They actually recommended I take Florajen with no. 2 (it's an oral probiotic). No clue if that helped, but I'll definitely be doing it again this time.

  • I had 4 under 4 when my trio was born I did it for the most part on my own it is possible. As for preemie them multiples I did that also like you my water broke but I was 34+6 he had no NICU time. I did have preterm labor with him that started at 27 weeks but was easy to stop. I got the 17P shot I had preterm labor again at 27 weeks but carried my trio to 35+3. Good luck and welcome

  • Congrats and welcome to the board. I have no experience with either of those (other than my twins being preemies born at 34+4) but wanted to welcome you to the board and wish you luck! You will find your groove and rock 4u5.
