How long does tummy time last?

My LO has gotten better with tummy time. She holds her head up the whole time and reaches for/ chews on toys. But she still doesn't last longer than 5 minutes before protesting and wanting to be rolled over (not rolling on her own yet- June 3 birthdate.)
Also, generally speaking, she doesn't spit up a whole lot but pretty much always spits up during tummy time. Even though I make sure not to put her on her tummy for a while after she's eaten. It's not a lot of spit up, but it's definitely there.

IDK the answer but when we went to the physical therapist to be evaluated for his flatspot this week she said....This should be their preferred playing position at 4 months and should work up to 30 mins at a time.

Wow @ohgrl95, 30 minutes? Damn. I have a 5 minute tummy timer too. We do it 3 times an hour but it is definitely not his preference. At four months can they grab toys while doing tummy time? Because he's not there yet. He's only 16 weeks so maybe that will change soon? Because he just gets bored with not being able to grab stuff. The mirror and propped up books only provide entertainment for so long.

So I don't force tummy time anymore but she rolls back to front and lives being able to play with toys and look in the mirror so she will often choose this position. Lasts probably 10-15 mins and them she gets bored of the baby in the mirror.

Before she could roll onto her tummy she HATED tummy time and it lasted maybe 3-5 mins, so I think you are ok. She was born may 23 so we are around two weeks ahead I guess.

W was in physical therapy for torticollis ( he just "graduated" this week- yay!) and the physical therapist had us putting him on tummy time for 5 minutes 3-4 times a day. W still gets fussy around the 5-6 minute point, but has gotten so much stronger.

Darn, we have birthday buddies but he can't play with toys yet. He has a hard time holding his chunky self up these days. Hopefully he gets there soon. He looks so longingly at his toys.

A still won't do more than a few minutes. Her preferred play position is in my lap. She rolls both ways so if I try to put her on her tummy she doesn't last too long before she's on her back. Even on her back she won't stay happy if I am not with her.

Our PT told us (also for torticollis) that they should be getting an hour a day in around 15 min bouts at this age. If they won't go 15 min just do it more times a day.

K only lasts for about 5 minutes as well.  She is 4 months old today.  We have the same issue with her spitting up.  She does roll over from front to back, so most of the time when I put her on her tummy, she will roll over as soon as I put her down.  Still not a big fan of tummy time!  I think it just varies from baby to baby.

I don't time his tummy time but he spits up every time - I think it's from the pressure on their little bellies. (But who knows). He's not a big spitter upper otherwise.

Also we do it right after she wakes up but before I feed her.

Ugh. I'm terrible. J hated tummy time so we haven't been strict with it... Often doing a modified on my chest. I've started doing it more on the mat an he likes it more.. Keeps his head up the while time and reaches for things.. But he usually starts crying after 5-10 mins.
He also doesn't roll over. He's done it once but really has no interest. He's 4 mos tomorrow.
We do spend a lot of time holding him and having him stand..

S usually lasts about 5-10 minutes before she gets mad. She's only rolled over 3 times total, and they were all within two days and hasn't done it since. I think she wants to reach for toys when she's on her tummy but hasn't quite figured out how to do that yet since she doesn't seem to grasp the concept of rolling!

L still doesn't like being on her tummy. She tolerates it for 5 minutes before getting mad enough to roll over. She's definitely not playing with toys and chilling on her belly yet.

Mine is not anywhere near that either. We do 5 minutes 3x an awake period which is awake about an hour. Sometimes he is only awake 45 mins. This is the same PT lady that shuned me for having him sleep in a RNP

I could have written this post @jayro10! To be honest, we don't really do a lot of tummy time these days, with the move and now being at grandma and grandpa's house she keeps being passed around and held/played with a lot. Lex likes to stand and sit (with support), so I'm counting that as good enough for her neck strength for now. She doesn't give two sh1ts about rolling over, either.
    She is here! 5-29-13

Glad we seem to be in the norm! I just wasn't sure at what age they usually hang out on their tummies for longer periods of time. She's definitely got good neck strength and loves to stand supported more than sitting lately. When she is on her tummy she can get her chest up off the ground. Now if we could just keep the milk from coming back up.....

    I

We're supposed to be doing tummy time??
Just kidding. Vi only lasts about 5-10 mins and gets frustrated or just plops her head down. She's only just started reaching/ grabbing for toys in the last few days, she is May 25th.

I am so glad to read this b-day buddy! We're in the same place.

My son was born on 5/29 and he can  do only 5 minutes of TT at a time. He has gotten better at keeping his head up, but he certainly doesn't enjoy it. I will admit that I don't do it as much as I should because he spits up a lot.  He does have great neck control despite all that.

Same here. C has only rolled once and doesn't show much interest. He also hates tummy time. He will do it for about 5 mins at a time then cries. I'm hoping this improves soon. He's 16.5 weeks.

My LO will tolerate it for 5-10 minutes and then succumbs to eating the plush play mat. She does pretty well with the Boppy though. Even better if she faces the tv. That's about the time I go ballistic on my H and remind him, NO TV! But then him and baby just give me this cute look and LO is saying, "But, Ma, look at how good I'm doing with tummy time." Then I concede, only on Sundays though and only while football is on.

Natalie only lasts five or so minutes and spits up too. I probably could have wrote your post because your baby sounds identical to mine.

We are 18wks and she does no more than 10/15min at a time. Maybe 3x a day... Not reaching for toys yet in this position but if they are right in front of her she will curl her fingers into them and gnaw on them. I'm not considering it reaching anyway... No rolling. Doesn't really seem interested in it. Doctor wasn't concerned last week.

He usually lasts about 5-10 min with tummy time before protesting.  I just try to do it as often as I can.  Sometimes I'll add a little pillow to prop him a bit and he'll be willing to do tummy time longer.  His PT said that is easier for them, and still counts as tummy time, so a great way to extend it.  He also likes sitting in the bumbo, so we alternate with that too.

My LO rolls from back to belly so he gives himself tummy time now. He also spits up every time but does last about 10 to 15 minutes before freaking out to be rolled over! Bad thing is he rolls in his sleep and ends up on his belly and yells in protest! So my peaceful nights with a baby that sleeps til 7 has not turned in to me flipping him over multiple times a night!
