my son just turned 6 weeks today and for the past 4 days hes been up from 7am until 9- midnight then he falls asleep and doesnt go for his next feed for 6 to 8 hours. he takes about 3 small naps during the day for maybe 30 mins. wants to eat every 1-2.5 hours.
i started a couple a weeks ago with feeding him every 3 hours during the day light hours and if he was sleeping i would wake him up on the 3 hour to feed him, then at night let him wake you up when he's hungry.
i got this info from a book called "baby 911". this method was suppose to get him to sleep those 4-5 hours he took in the day and tranfer them to the night hours so i can get some sleep.
well it working too well. its kind of crazy with all the cluster feeding during the day and playing with my son all day but i wasnt expecting for him to sleep so long during the night. it kind of freaks me out.
i asked his dr about this. she said that was odd. she said to wake him in the middle of the night and dont let him go past four hours without eating. i told her i tried but hes in a milk coma.so she said, well as long as hes eating during the day then guesses its ok. hes 9.6oz now and eats about 25-26 oz. during the day.
is anyone else going through this? i feel like hes too young to be sleeping this long. but idk im a ftm.
Re: is your baby up all day and sleeps through the night?
Anyway, if the pedi. isn't worried then you shouldn't either.
Our ped's instruction was to keep trying to wake him until he gets back to birthweight, and then he can sleep until as long as he wants to.
It sounds like a blessing, but it is scary and hard to manage hourly feedings all day long. We didn't follow any plans, it's just the schedule he made for us!
DS born 9/3/13; DD born 7/22/15; LO due 5/28/18
FS (age 5) and FD (age 2) to become AS/AD very soon!
The majority of babies sleep an average of 16 hours per day; usually 8 during the day and 8 at night. So anything from 14-18 hours of sleep would be considered typical. If he fits in those ranges and his doc is fine with it, it sounds like everything is good.
I am curious, though, if he isn't over tired from you waking him up to feed him. The more you wake a child up (i.e. shorten their naps) the less they sleep at a time. Then they completely crash and it is impossible to wake them up. If you are concerned, you might try not waking him tomorrow and seeing what he does.
