Breastfeeding

How many times a day?

I am curious - how many times a day does your LO typically eat? Mine is 12 weeks old and has been eating only 5 times a day since he was about 6 weeks. I feed him on demand, he just kind of put himself on that schedule. He seems to be gaining weight well and gets plenty of wet diapers... I am asking because I am trying to figure out how to do daycare bottles and pumping, He started last week, and based on suggestions here (you all are super helpful, thank you!), I decided to send 3, 4 oz bottles. He ate them all, no problem. But, he was getting his last bottle about 30 mins before I was picking him up, so my plan of nursing when we first got home didn't really work out. Plus I had to add a third pumping session at work in order to get enough. On Friday I decided to try to adjust my work schedule so that I could leave an hour early, and only had the daycare give him 2 bottles. This seemed to work better, but the daycare providers were really questioning this idea, I think that other breastfed babies must drink more for them? I sent 5 oz bottles since I was only sending two, and according to the calculator on kellymom, if he eats 5 times a day, 5 oz seemed like a good amount. Does this seem ok? I'm starting to wonder if he should be eating more often...

Re: How many times a day?

  • I would keep doing what you're doing and just keep and eye on his diaper count and weight gain. If he's content, and he's gaining weight and having the appropriate amount of diapers, then I think you're all set. Trust yourself, you know what he needs, not them.

  • Ok, thanks! It would be nice if this works for him, I think only having to pump twice a day at work would be easier to fit in :)
