Working Moms

Another Nanny post

So here is another scenario. I just found out that I am pregnant with number 2. With number 1, I had to take maternity leave unpaid. (It is bs, but it is what it is.) I'm sure the same will be true with this one. What should I do about my nanny during that time? Just have her come and help me out at home? I'm not going to give her my entire maternity leave off paid...but, at the same time, I can't imagine she would go for 2 months off unpaid. Wondering what have others done in this situation...

Re: Another Nanny post

  • We don't have a nanny, but my SIL was one for a family that had a second child while she was with them.  She continued to work as she could watch the first child while mom focused on the newborn.  She also started caring for the new one a few weeks in to give Mom some time to herself and learn the routine for both once mom was back at work FT.

Side question, but how would your ML be completely unpaid?  Do you not at least get some short term disability for your recovery for part of your leave?

  • @jnn - I work for a small law firm. I got nothing. We get no benefits other than a small retirement match. No std. I don't even get health insurance through them. My husband and I have to purchase a very expensive but crappy policy on the private market. At one time we were paying 1400 per month for dh, myself and ds.

  • First, congrats!!!

If you're going to pay her part time, I would have her help out. At the very least, give you a break to catch up on sleep. Who will be watching LO while you are in the hospital? Maybe she can help immediately, day 1 of ML and 2 days/wk like her current situation.

  • I'm guessing that my mother or inlaws will watch my ds while I am in the hospital. I am like 4 w 2 d so I have not told anyone yet. Just this situation occurred to me. I guess I will just have her come as usual and help out. I am sure the help will be needed. I can't see any other reasonable solution even though I will have to be paying her and not making any money myself.

  • I can't imagine she'd be able to keep working for you if you don't pay her for the time you are on maternity leave.  It sucks you won't be getting paid and you have to pay her but I know there's no way our nanny could go 2 months without a full paycheck.  Honestly, I doubt it would be financially possible for her to even accept part time for 2 months but I don't really know for sure.  Of course you'll just have to talk to her and see what you can do.  If I was in this scenario, I would feel that I had to pay the nanny full time for the time I was on leave.  It's not her fault I had a baby and don't need her everyday.  That's just me though.

  • I would absolutely keep our nanny during maternity leave if it's within your budget.  Our nanny left when DD started preschool.  Then, I had #2, and DD was home for the summer.  It was rough juggling a newborn and DD who was adjusting to sharing mommy with a needy baby and bored from not being in school.  My inlaws and parents helped out a little for the first month and they did a great job taking DD places and keeping her entertained so I could rest with the baby.  If our previous nanny had been available, I would have had her do the same.

Awesome!  Then as long as she is good with it, I would just have her come maybe one day a week and then as needed.

  • Keep her part time. Will help #1 adjust to #2. I had six weeks no pay maternity leave as well. Complete BS. Makes me so upset how a developed country doesn't have mandatory paid maternity leave.

I would keep her around in her normal capacity to watch LO1 whe you deal with LO2 and watch both LOs so you can run an errand or catch a nap while you get used to a routine with two LOs. As for payment, I would set aside a little money each month between now and when you go on leave to be able to afford to pay her while you're out. For example, if she makes $3000 between the two months, and you'll be going out on ML 6 months from now, I'd adjust the budget, if at all possible, to set adide $500 a month in savings to have her two months' salary saved and ready to go. I had to do this when I was teaching- I budgeted a little bit of my paycheck every month to have enough for expenses for the summer months so as to not need to get a summer job. It's all in the preparation.

  • I totally agree with the previous poster. We aren't pregnant yet with #2 but hope to be soon. I definitely plan to keep my part-time nanny during ML - at least half of which will be unpaid. DD won't be old enough for preschool yet and being home alone with her and a newborn will surely kill me. In fact on going to have my nanny come one extra day if her schedule allows it. For me it will be money well spent and I would cut costs elsewhere before I let her go and complicate my own life trying to juggle 2under2 and find a new nanny during my short ML to boot!
