Re: NICU mom's check-in!

  • How many weeks pregnant would you be?

    32 weeks tomorrow

How long has your baby/babies been in the NICU?

They will be 2 weeks old on Wednesday!

    Milestones, issues, goals, etc?

Vincent (Baby A) got his PICC line out and he is taking full feedings as of the night before yesterday. Then last night he started spitting up. They are holding steady on him for now hoping that he will adjust. Dominic (Baby B) has had pooping issues from day one but they are getting small poops or smears at every diaper change for the last couple days. We hope that he has an explosion and gets all that poop out! Because of the poop issue he hasn't been taking feedings well. They have stopped and started, a few times. The last couple days he was NPO but today they started feeds again. Hoping and praying that he starts pooping and they both take their feedings well.

    How are you holding up?

I'm not really. My 4 year old started preschool today and I had to leave him there, crying and screaming for me. It also messed up my usual NICU schedule so I'm a freaking disaster today. On top of all this stress my H is being a huge jerk because he sees I'm stressed and can't fix it. Oh yeah, that's helpful. I hate feeling so helpless and out of control. I hate my MIL calling/texting to ask for an update. I usually update about once per day or every other day depending on what's going on. That isn't enough for you, woman?!! I'm barely holding it together here!!! Rant over. :(

  • -How many weeks pregnant would you be?
    38 weeks today.

-How long has your baby/babies been in the NICU?
    99 days

    -Milestones, issues, goals, etc?
We are hoping to bring Beatrix home tomorrow but it all hinges on her eye exam scheduled for 7:30am. At last week's exam she had stage 2 ROP in one eye and stage 2-3 in the other. If her eyes have progressed then she most likely will need surgery and therefore have to stay.

    -How are you holding up?
I want what is best for Beatrix but I am ready to go home. This journey has been a roller coaster and while I know my life will never be normal again I could use some normalcy. I am grateful for the wonderful care she has received and thankful for her progress and relative good health. I miss my DH and our pets.

  • New here. My guy was born 9/2 at 33 +4 due to me needing surgery on my intestines. They took him to operate on me. This has added a lot of guilt into my equation. Anyway, I was discharged today...weird to be home and get back to life and sad to have left my baby!

How many weeks pregnant would you be? 34 and 4

How long has your baby/babies been in the NICU? 1 week today

Milestones, issues, goals, etc? Umbilical line being removed tonight. Hoping he tolerates his feeds & at 8 they will up him to 32 cc through the tube. Attempt to remove nasal cannula. They've tried twice, but he retracts a little more than they'd like. Keeping my fingers crossed. Biggest thing is now that his UV line is coming out, I should get to do skin to skin tomorrow! I've been DYING for this as I feel I really have not been able to connect with my baby yet.

How are you holding up? Eh. My big kids (3 1/2 and 1 1/2) are all off schedule and cranky from bopping around with grandparents all week. They want me to hold them, which I can't and it makes me feel terrible. Trying to get back on a schedule and figure out how to fit in pumping and trips to NICU....

How long has your baby/babies been in the NICU?
    ---Just over five weeks

    Milestones, issues, goals, etc?
---well, we were getting ready to start nuzzling/nippling, but they detected a murmur. She went back on the vapotherm due to struggling a little with wall air (too dry) and now were unable to do oral feedings bc of the vapo. We have a cardiologist consult tomorrow so well see what they say; the neonatologist thinks it could be a PDA.

    How are you holding up?
---Im doing ok. Frustrated by this latest setback because it always seems to be something. Started out with having trouble conceiving, crappy pregnancy, early delivery and now NICU. I can't help but think about all the things we've been "cheated" out of. Some days are worse than others with the pity party. I went back to work last week and luckily I have the most amazing boss ever. I was going to come to the hospital for her appt today (got bumped to tmw) and use it as my lunch break and she told me to just take my computer, use the wifi there and "work". Super supportive and has said from the get go that if I need or want to see her at any time to take a break and go see her--the work can wait. Feels good to have such support at work.
  • @aliwisewoman---my MIL is the same way. She calls incessantly asking for updates. We finally started a Caring Bridge website that we update and send to family to avoid the calls, texts, etc. It's helped a lot!
  • 36 weeks and 1 day... Day seven of our NICU stay... 48 hours of phototherapy for the second time for rising bili score. Hematocrits are dropping indicating a possible need for blood transfusion. Still working on latch and feeding so she can get her feeding tube out... I'm exhausted and have major mommy guilt for my 2 year old...

We had to go on and off phototherapy multiple times. Finally she plateaued and dropped and they dc'd the daily bili checks. We also have low hematocrits and we having a transfusion today actually. I'm nervous and hesitant about it, but they say it may put her over the hump on breathing on her own.

    Hang in there!
  • @luvboston don't give up on breast feeding, every little bit counts. It helps them sooooooooo much!
  • How many weeks pregnant would you be?
    31 weeks on thursday

How long has your baby/babies been in the NICU?
    Since birth 9/8

    Milestones, issues, goals, etc?
Off cPAP! upped her feedings to 6. I was able to supply enough for one of her feeding to be all my milk! She still hasn't pooped so fx that happens soon. Doctor said her jaundice will probably be bad enough in the morning to put her on the billi light. That's hard for me because her and I both love our skin-to-skin time.
    How are you holding up?
like everyone else here knows it's so hard. I'll be getting discharged soon. The thought of leaving her is hard but at the same time it gives me a chance to get everything ready for her at home. I'm so grateful and lucky to live 2 minutes from the hospital. That has made the thought of going home a lot easier.

    @luvboston
I get how frustrating breastfeeding can be! I was so upset that for awhile i would pump every 2-3 hours and get nothing, not even a drop! Stick with it if you can but if it becomes more of a stress then do what's best for your family! My LC told me to not look at how much was coming out just focus on something else, the amount is not what is important. You are trying and anything you can give is great!
