3rd Trimester

Failed 1 Hour Glucose @ 166

Yesterday I had my 1 hour glucose test and two hours ago I found out that I failed with a whopping score of 166... due to work scheduling and school, I couldnt immediately go in for the 3 hour today or tomorrow at the nurses request.  I go next Tuesday, their next available appointment and am terrified.

I'm 27 weeks pregnant, 5'11" 130 pounds (23 pounds gained since pregnancy) and live an fairly active lifestyle.  I'm so upset about the results but deep down knew it'd probably come to me having to do the 3 hour.  I'm absolutely terrified mainly because I have to fast starting from 8pm Monday night until the finish of the tests.  I dont do bloodwork very well ever, let alone being poked 4 times all on an empty stomach.

For my 1 hour, my Doctor told me to eat normally until 2pm the day of the test (my appointment was at 4pm in the afternoon).  The day of my appointment, I had cereal for breakfast (10am) and a snack of string cheese, cottage cheese, and a small apple around 1pm, then water after that yet I still fail.  I dont understand and I'm worried about the possibilities of GD, failing my 3 hour, or even worse blacking out during the 3 hour (which I have a history of doing with bloodwork).

Any advice?

  • I'm sorry you failed your test. GD is not usually a crisis when it's managed. I'm just sorry you have to go through the second test. One positive thing to remember is that you can still pass the next test. I used to work in an OB office and it was fairly common to pass the 3-hour after failing the 1-hour... even with a 166. If it makes you feel better, my number was higher and my blood sugars seem fine now. I hope it stays that way indefinitely. good luck!
  • Do you have anyone who can come with you to the 3-hr test, and just sit with you? Especially during the blood draws? They only last a second. It isn't like your initial pregnancy bloodwork at all.

As far as the possibility of having GD, there is no point getting worked up about it right now. There is nothing you can do to change it. If you don't have it, you'll have wasted a bunch of time worrying, and if you do have it they will get you set up with the info you need quickly. It is manageable, and you figure it out for your own sake and the sake of the baby.

Mainly I just want to say that whatever happens, you are going to be fine. The test isn't as awful as it sounds, and even a diagnosis of GD isn't the end of the world.

  • Wait, you were 5'11 and 107 Pre preg? Girlfriend... I was 5'9 and 135 and a size 2! :/

I'm glad you are having a healthy pregnancy, but I'm just stuck on that figure. Sorry to fixate.

I failed my 1 hour about the same as you did (in the 160's) and passed my 3 hour just fine. There's nothing you can do to pass, but the cut offs are way higher, like the 1 hour score needs to be 195 or less and then it stair steps down each hour. Just follow your doc's instructions for test day.

I did skip the sweets and ice cream the night before even though that doesn't matter, it made me feel better.

  • Im not looking to trick the test as some may think. Im mainly asking questions on what others doctors recommended as for intake of food in the days prior. My doctor hasnt been forthcoming in about every aspect of my pregnancy and Ive read a lot of posts where women say they were given an eating plan/diet for the days before. For the one hour the doctor said to eat normally but yet when I got to the lab they said I shouldnt have ate at all. :-( All kinds of miscommunication it seems.

Im hoping that my Doctors office will do like they did for me when I went to urgent care earlier on in my pregnancy (5weeks along) when they done tons of bloodwork. Seeing that I have a tendency to black out with bloodwork they put an IV in and just drew the blood from there when they needed it instead of consistently poking me every few hours. Thankfully my husband was able to get the time off to be with me, its not the worry of having GD or caring for it, its just the worry of my levels at the one hour in comparison to the whole 3 hour process.
  • I was diagnosed with GD.  And yeah the test sucks....  I do fine during that stuff, but did feel nauseous through the first hour.  They told me I could lie down in a back room and kind of sleep through it if I wasn't feeling well.  I pulled through it and could feel myself feeling more normal as it went on.  It was more boring than anything else.  Just bring something to do like read a book or even watch a movie if you have something portable.  Keeping myself distracted was the key.

OH and bring food with you for when you complete the test, and plan on taking a nap when you get home because you may be drained from no food and boredom.  I was allowed to sip on water and eat whatever I wanted until 8 pm the  night before.  I did eat pretty healthy but it didn't matter; like the ladies said, if you have it you have it.

Just to make you feel a little better too if you do end up with it.  Everyone I know that has/had it has been very healthy, good weight, and very active; including myself.  I was very angry when I was diagnosed and my brother kind of talked me off the ledge so to say.  With pregnancy you simply have to learn to accept that you don't have any control over your body and just have to learn to go with the flow.  Mine is managed by diet and exercise and really what pregnant woman wants to be on a diet right???!! haha!  Some days are hard and some are easier but it is what it is.... My preference is to diet instead of using meds.

Just remember, like the peeing in the middle of the night, and the aches and pains it too will pass when you become "mom".  Good luck! If you have questions there is some info in the high risk boards about GD.

If you have GD, it doesn't matter if you fast or not.  I've seen lots of ladies say they were told to fast and others that weren't told to fast.  I was one of those who didn't fast prior to my 1 hour test; I passed.  You ate a well-balanced meal earlier in the day.  It in no way could have made you fail the test.  However, once you drink the sugary drink, you shouldn't drink/eat until after your blood is drawn at the 1 hour mark.  Maybe that is what the Lab meant?  Anyways, good luck.

  • I failed my one hour with this pregnancy (no issues with first) my score was 148 and I fasted.  passed 3 hour with flying colors.  don't stress just yet.  and if you do fail the three hour, they will help you to maintain your blood sugar.

The 3 hr isn't that bad. I had magazines, an ipad and my phone. You're going to be fine. This is NOTHING compared to 24 hrs of labor. Just go in with a positive attitude and eat what you normally would eat. I was instructed to stop eating 12 hrs before my test and don't go sugar or carb crazy. If you have GD you want them to catch it now. I was diagnosed with it and honestly I'm happy I was! The diet is simple and I've had great success with it. Whether you're diagnosed or not you're going to be great!

  • I fasted for my one hour test, and I failed at 175. I passed my three hour test just fine. Sometimes, you just have some off days.

Since then, sugar has shown up in my urine just once, and she said it was probably because I had a bowl and a half of Honey Nut Cheerios. Go figure.

  • My OB refused to allow me to eat after 12am the day of the test. I failed at 141. Since labs don't open until almost 7am here I had to repeat that on Friday and drink an even worse concoction. During 1 and 2 hr GTT you can have the decently flavored 5g orange drink. During 3 hr GTT where I live you get the 10g lemon-lime drink which is what I imagine Sprite would taste like if you added several packets of sugar and let it go flat for hours. No, getting poked 4 times isn't pleasant. My situation particularly because I only have 1 accessible A/C vein between my 2 arms. So 4 tubes of blood out of the same vein in the same area for 4 hours straight wasn't my idea of a cup of tea either. Keep all this mind to the fact that my blood sugar for the majority of my life has run so low that I was diagnosed with hypoglycemia. I even passed my first GTT with my DS with a 110. Now suddenly I'm on the opposite end of the spectrum with DD. Sometimes it's just how it goes.

  • Let the nurses know your concerns about blacking out-they can probably find a safer place for you to wait and have someone monitor you more closely.

  • Thanks everyone - so far this weekend I've ate how I normally would have but figured I'd start my limiting my diet after noon tomorrow in preparation for fasting to start at 8pm.  I'm still fairly paranoid about Tuesday morning and all the pokes but at the end of the day, I know its got to be done.

I'm hoping and praying everything goes well and I dont black out - the chance of being diagnosed with GD isnt my worry, its the fact of the matter of the bloodwork.  I'll post an update after I get my results :)
  • PP's are right.  If you have it, you have it.  I, unfortunately, was one of them.  I failed the 1 hour by 5 points.  145 with a 140 cut off.  I had heard that lots of woman fail the first but pass the second test.  I wasn't that lucky.  But if you do have GD it really isn't the end of the world.  I cried about it but now I'm glad that I'm monitoring it because it gives me a sense of security for me and the baby.

  • it's going to be fine...I had the 4 pokes it's not pleasant the 2nd ones the  worst I asked to lie down and I went to sleep. you must fast but it' not that bad. i'm borderline and going to see a specialist I also saw a nutritionist, biggest thing get off milk in the morning and very low carbs for breakfast  this helped me bring my sugar way down just those small changes. i'm eating an avocado and some cheese mainly for the morning and it's so good for you. get the data is all I can say. the drugs my dr is recommending are insulin and glyburide - I don't like the research on the glyburide no way will I take it even the manufacturer say not to take it if you're pregnant yet it was recommended to me dr are not scientists!!! good luck.

  • 1.) Follow your lab instructions

2.) If you have GD it has to do with how your placenta helps your body process insulin. Lifestyle, weight & family history have relatively low impact. I've known a 100 lbs vegan that ran 4 miles daily while pg to have GD all three times.

3.) I failed the one-hour every time & passed the three hour. It's common.
