BTDT spit-up?

FTM so a little naïve on this. LO is 1 month old and when I lay her down flat after she eats she has been spitting up, almost every time. She didn't spit-up or have upset stomach/gassiness up until the last week or maybe 2. All breast milk is given, either pumped or bf, if that makes a different She is still gaining weight and growing so I know she is getting enough food so I am not worried about that being an issue.

Is this normal for her to spit-up whenever she lays flat? I am concerned about reflux, but of course I could just be paranoid and overreacting. Anyone that knows anything on this subject, it would be greatly appreciated. (Disclaimer: We go to her ped on Monday and I plan on talking to her then, just a little curious/ concerned) Thanks in advance

It depends on how much she is spitting up, I think. Does she need to be burped longer? Or maybe laid down in something that has an incline (RnP?) instead of flat on her back? Waiting longer to put her down could help as well.

Sometimes it looks like quite a bit of milk but not always. It does help he to be in her RnP, which is what she has been sleeping in most of the time now, but she will still spit up in that too. MIL advised me to hold her longer before laying her down which also seems to help, but again not always. She burps every time she eats, usually more than once and I try not to move her until she is sleeping.

  • DD spit up quite a bit but her pedis weren't concerned because she wasn't in pain (happy spitter) and she was gaining weight well.  We did end up burping her quite a bit and holding her upright for 20 minutes after feedings.  It was a pain but helped some.  When she was a little older (can't remember age, at least 3-4 months) we borrowed a Bumbo from a friend and I used that for her upright time after feedings so I could get things done.  If I remember correctly the ergo helped a little too (but I kept a burp cloth between her and me for the times she did still spit up.  We have had friends who eliminated dairy or other foods from their diets but their LOs were definitely in pain and not gaining weight as well.

  • Thanks ladies.

She does get fussy at times when she is about to spit-up but most of the time she is calm and just looking around and just spits-up out of no-where. I looked at a kellymom article after I posted and it said a lot of the same things you ladies said. So again thank you. Also if anyone else know about this subject other opinions are always welcome

  • I remember being told by my pedi that spit up is a laundry problem, not a medical problem. Some babies spit up a TON, others don't.

Unless, of course, it's either making the baby stop gaining weight or causing the baby to be upset.

  • My LO has reflux and the doctor said burp... But most bf babies don't burp as much. She also said the first few weeks until he can resolve it better while sleeping, put his carseat in his bassinet to keep him somewhat elevated. (He hated it) so I brought his play swing in... Been working a lot better for both of us and thankfully, I have only had to grab him a couple times to help get it out vs several times a night on his back.

Let's be honest, when its 3am and you are feeding your baby and barely able to keep your eyes open it definitely gets harder to keep baby upright for 20 min after.

Just keep trying different things, you should find what works best for you and your sweet one. :)
  • I haven't had my baby yet, but from my experiences in day cares and working as a nanny (but never with newborns), some babies just spit up more than others. For some, they almost never spit up and others seem to be almost guaranteed to spit up after every feeding and sometimes it seems like a lot. It doesn't seem to bother them any, just how they are.

  • At my job, we have a couple if residents who are dr ordered to stay upright for a minimum of 30 minutes after eating.

You may need to keep her upright longer, but the reality is that babies just spit up. As long as she's satisfied and gaining weight, I wouldn't worry too much.

  • Some babies are just "happy spitters", meaning they spit-up often but it doesn't bother them. They aren't in pain, discomfort, etc. They just tend to spit a lot. The best thing is to keep LO upright for 30 minutes after nursing, but that's not always a possibility. If she seems to be bothered by the spit it, it might be reflux. Does she arch her back during feedings? Or when she is spitting up?
