Carseat Question- Older Preemie

I am just thinking ahead but we were at our 18 month well visit this week and our pedi asked if she was still rear facing. Standard question he goes over at every appt. I jokingly said "at the rate she's going she will be until she is 3!" But now I am thinking, if she doesn't meet the weight limit at two do we keep her rear facing? I know she will not meet weight in 6 months, she is still our peanut! We have the Britax Chaperone and I believe it goes up to 30lbs. So my question is did any of you other Mama's have this issue and what did you do? Also since I am on the subject, what carseat did you use/prefer for front facing? We love our britax, also have the b-ready stroller. So I was probably just going to go with the boulevard or advocate. But I am open to what others have used and liked!

TIA!

We have had a busy and fun summer, I have lurked all summer though! Hope all current and grad preemies are doing well!

  • We plan to continue RFing until they outgrow the weight or height requirements. At 17m they're only 29in and 21/22lbs so we have quite awhile. New studies have shown that RFing up to 4y is safest as long as they meet the seat requirements. We love our Britax Boulevards.

  • My preemie is 2 1/2 and she is still rear facing. I plan to keep her that way until she outgrows the height or weight limits. Likely she will outgrow the height limit soon but for now she is still happy facing backwards. Its the safest option so I don't see any reason to change as long as she is within the requirements.
  • Thanks ladies! Your confirming what I had assumed. Leave her rear facing as long as she needs to be.
Missa_g, question for you. How bulky are the boulevard's RFing? I know her chaperone is bigger than most, we have a suv, its a crossover so not overly roomie. Just thinking we may be better off upgrading to something like that, that she wil grow into since it can be RFing. Also do your LO's have more leg room? Thanks!!

I don't feel like they're super bulky, but my husband and I are short so it's not a big deal for us how much space they take up. I don't think they have tons of leg room, but they seem very comfortable in them. I think BRU will let you try them in your car before buying.

  • We are still rear-facing. I'm in no rush to flip her.

  • My oldest RFed until he was almost 3yo. We switched to a convertible seat (Diono radian) when he was about 8mo and that has a RF limit of 40lbs.
