Infant/Toddler winter coats

DD was born in January so last year I just bundled her up in her infant seat and a shower cap style cover.  I live in MI so we will need a fairly heavy duty Winter coat this year.  What brand would you recommend?  What price do you typically pay for it?  I really like to wait until things go on sale but I am thinking I will probably need to pick this up in the next month or so and may not really have much of a say in how much I pay for it.

Re: Infant/Toddler winter coats

  • Why not try your local buy and sell? We just got a winter coat/suit for DD off ours and it looks brand new. At this age they wear the coat for such a short time, even buying it used there's almost no wear and tear. We got ours for $10!

  • I only buy the 3 in 1 jackets due to car seats.  I hate having to completely remove their jacket every time I get them in their car seats because they get so cold by the time I get them both in their car seats.  I love the versatility of the combo jackets.  I have only bought TCP jackets, we just moved from FL last year though so this is only the second year I have needed to buy winter jackets.  They run about $40-$50, but TCP always gives out TCP cash and coupons.  I got DD's jacket this year for 1/2 price.  I bought a size up last year for DS so I could layer but it also allowed for the jacket to be worn longer.  Last year DS was 12 months but I bought 18-24 months.  It didn't look too big on him at the time and he can still wear it this year.  TCP jackets hold up okay for the short time that the kids actually wear them.

  • I live in michigan too. I go to the Columbia outlet every year. The quality is excellent and the prices are great. I've never paid over $45. I get fleece summer jackets there too those are around $25-$30. I sized up and dd wore it for fall and the spring.

  • I also like the 3 in one's for daily wear.  The fleece is great for the car ride and top layer great for travel to and from the car.  This year I bought the 7 day a week jacket from Hanna.  I also found a North Face coat at a mom's sale for $5 for preschool outdoor playtime.
  • I have bought down Columbia coats and North Face fleeces at Nordstrom Rack for my oldest. They're all in perfect condition to pass to my five month old.

  • DD wore a Widgeon coat when she was little...not sure they would be heavy enough? But they last forever bc they start out big and then can be worn for a long time.
  • I usually get a bulky winter coat for playing outside at consignment sales. For the day to day errands where outside time is minimal I do a bubble vest since its much easier to get on/off when getting in/out of the car. I do a long sleeve shirt under a hooded sweatshirt pulled over a fleece hat and a blanket for the car. The kids never get cold even on the really cold days.

  • I do 3-in-1s for my kids. They wear the fleece in the car and if they need it they put the shell on to go outside. We don't bother with the shell unless we're spending time outside. The fleece is enough to get to and from the car at home, school, stores, etc. When I lived in NYC and parked on street we used the outside more since it was usually a several block walk to the car, but otherwise it's NBD to wear just the fleece.

  • Thank you so much for the input.  I am definitely leaning towards a 3 in 1 now.

Widgeon was great. Now we do Hanna Anderrson for the girls and north face.
Yeah, now we do North Face. Not as cute. :( But much "cooler" according to DD. Random story, but DD's lovie/blanket is a baby Widgeon coat. It's a blue one in size 6 mo. that I got on sale before she was born. She loved it so much when she was little she would cuddle up with it, so she started sleeping with it. Still going strong 8 years later, Blue Coat is it's name. Original.
I just looked up Widgeon and they are SO cute.  We saw them in a specialty baby shop on vacation this Summer but I couldn't justify the purchase at the time.  It looks too light for Winter but I may have to pick one up for Fall and Spring.

They go on sale a lot down here, so you might want to keep an eye out...btw, where do you live that you need that for Spring. LOL We only wear them in Dec-Feb. here!

Michigan. Weather can be really hit or miss here.  We have had snow storms in April.  It was 41 degrees when we were getting ready yesterday.
