Twins born from 34-36weeks!!

Hi MoMs! I just had a doctors appt with my MFM and was told she hopes to get me to 34 weeks. I'm 33weeks on Saturday. She has the feeling I'm going to develope pre-e. because of my obscene swelling a rapid weight gain. I don't have protein in my urine or high BP but she is thinking its going to go that way quick. So I have 4 doctors appts in the next week to monitor me and the babies. I'm feeling worried about the babies coming sooner than 36 weeks :/ and I would love to hear your stories.... When did you deliver? Vaginal or csection? How big were your babies? What caused your early delivery? How long where they in the NICU etc?

Re: Twins born from 34-36weeks!!

  • Mine were born at 35w4. They were mono/dis that had been getting monitored for a growth discordance since about 18 weeks and the difference passed the 20% mark so the MFM decided to deliver them that day. I had a C/S bc Baby B was breech and the OB on call wasn't comfortable doing a vaginal delivery with either of them being breech. For the sudden early delivery, though, everything went very well. Babies were 6 lbs 8 oz and 5 lbs 3 oz, needed 4 days in the NICU and then were home 2 days after that. They are healthy 8-month olds today!

Best of luck and I hope your babies can keep cooking for a few more weeks!

  • I went into my doctors appointment and was having regular contractions so he decided it was time to go ahead and have the babies--I delivered at 34 weeks 6 days. Baby A weighed 5lbs 13oz and baby B weighed 5lbs. 10oz. I had a repeat c-section. Both girls were in the NICU for 12 days but were there mostly as feeders and growers.

  • I had horrible swelling and rapid weight gain from about week 22 on (even with the GD diet I was still putting on weight from massive water retention), and I never ended up with any BP or urine issues and carried them to 37w3d.  Don't lose hope - you might be able to go longer than you think!

I had my boys at 34w. I had been dx w mild pre-e at 32w due mainly to protein in my urine. I had slightly elevated BP and some swelling as well. I was monitored v closely an took my BP twice a day at home. But the pre-e never progressed, so hopefully yours won't either!

My water ended up breaking right at 34w after a week of irregular but slightly painful contrax. I had a c/s bc baby a was breech, but was put under general bc his cord prolapsed when my water broke.

They were 5lbs and 5lbs 8oz and spent 13 days in the NICU mostly as feeders/growers.

  • Also, have you had steroid shots? I got them at 32w when I was dx w mild pre-e and I really believe that they helped my boys. They needed no breathing support at all.

  • I had my guys at 34w 3 d.  I had high BP at 31 weeks and was put on bedrest.  At 34weeks I developed pre-e- diagnosed because of a 24 hr catch- I had not previously had protein in my urine.  So we were just waiting until I started with other issues- 3 days later I started to see stars and my BP was consistently high even laying down.  So off to L&D.  I had a C-section since both boys were breech- this was no surprise for me since I knew this from that week's u/s.  J weighed 5lb4ozs and N weighed 5lb3ozs.  They spent 17 days in the NICU- just to learn to suck/swallow/breath- which is something you can't do anything to hurry along it happens when it happens.  They needed no breathing assistance, had no A&Bs- basically it was just the eating thing.  I did not have steroid shots.
  • Had my twins at 34 weeks. They spent 10 days in the nicu. I did have steroid shots. They are happy healthy 3 1/2year olds now.

  • I was put on bedrest at 30 wks for a growth discordance and got steroid shots at 30wks (DD wasn't too small, he was just a lot bigger than her 25% vs 75%). At 34 wks, my feet started itching, but my first bile salt level didn't show cholestasis ( my level went from 3 to 33 in 2 weeks...anything over 11 is cholestasis-we didn't get the level of 33 back until after delivery, but by then we KNEW I had it!).

My BP started going up and down but no proteinuria between 34-35.5 wks. I was seen on a Friday @ 35 wks, 4 days, BP up and down, no protein, but my OB drew labs. She called Monday night to say that my LDH was elevated and that I should be induced. I told her that I had a headache and had been contracting all day & had lost my mucus plug. We met at the office and I was 3-4cm/80%-already in labor! But, I had 2+ proteinuria, BP was 150/100, so I went straight to L&D. I did get magnesium and my labs on Monday night already showed early HELLP syndrome. I had a very quick labor (OB broke water at 1030pm), DD came in 4 pushes at 2:16am. She weighed 4lbs 15.7oz. DS made me work a little more since his head was much bigger. He was born at 3:16am and weighed 6lbs 9.4oz! I had two head down babies and an easy vaginal delivery. I am soooooooooooo glad that I didn't need a c/s.

They did wonderful and never needed SCN/NICU. We had HUGE breastfeeding struggles though and I pumped for 3 months until they learned to correctly latch. Ds did need his circ redone which "may" have been related to being a 36 weeker. DS did start having some wheezing issues ("reactive airway disease") after he turned 1...but we'll probably never know if that's related to being a 36 weeker or if that would have happened if he had been FT.

    good luck!

  • I had mine at 35w6d.  They were 5.1 and 4.14.  They spent 1 week in the NICU.  Mostly as feeders and growers.  They did need a few hours of oxygen support right after birth, but they were fine, just small.  I delivered via "emergency" c-section.  Emergency meaning I was unscheduled, but not so emergent as rushed to the OR.  They admitted me around midnight, I had gotten there around 6pm for monitoring, and I delivered at 4pm.  I had severe hypertension.  I don't think I fully developed pre-E, as my bloodwork and protein in the urine were pretty normal.  But my bp was crazy weird and fluctuating like crazy.  The high was 191/105.

  • My twins were born at 35w6d. I was having severe swelling and fluctuating BP (and I had PUPPP). They monitored me overnight for pre-e and there was protein present so I was to stay another day for observations. By the next morning I had a severe headache and my ob gave me the choice to induce or c-section. We chose a c-section because we didn't want any complications with either of the babies. C-section went well and they were 5lb13oz and 7lbs. Minor issue with blood sugar regulating for them but no nicu and we were home in 4 days healthy and happy.
    Good luck and happy babies!
  • I was right on this cusp so just to give you ease of mind-- my babies were born at 36w1d after I went into active labor (everything but my water breaking.) they were delivered via csection bc little man was transverse. They were perfectly fine and spent no time in the NICU.
I hope you can keep them in until they are fully ready. Try not to stress! Wishing happy and healthy babies for you!

  • I had mine at 36 weeks due to IUGR, they were 4.3 and 4.14 and my little guy spent 2 weeks in the NICU for feeding issues. I had a scheduled C-Section because my doctors felt it was best. We had issues with breast feeding and I ended up pumping for them for the first 3 months. Hope yours stay in for as long as possible -- good luck!

  • I had my girls at 34w4d. My OB was concerned because there was a growth issue from a u/s at 32 weeks and 33 weeks. I was sent in for a NST on Sunday Sept 30th. At that point the nurses didn't like the results so I was sent for a BPP. In the mean time, I gave a urine sample and they did bloodwork. My BPP came back showing Baby A had stopped practice breathing (first sign of distress). My urine was positive for protein, and my bloodwork was showing HELLP Syndrome. Also, my BP was going up (I think my highest was 140/110).Even though both girls were head down, I ended up with a c/s because the OB on call didn't think they would tolerate the labour plus my body wasn't ready. Baby A was 2lbs9oz and Baby B was 3lbs7oz. They were in the SCN for 4 weeks mainly as feeders/growers. They had no lung issues.. screamed when they came out.. I think they missed their warm home lol.

  • My girls were born 34w4d.  I was contracting without knowing it and ended up being 5 -6cm dilated when I went into the doctor's office.  I had relatively no signs or symptoms of PTL; it all happened very quickly (I had been at the doctor's office only 4 days prior to this).  I had an "emergency" c/s (as in not scheduled) due to both girls being breech.  Baby A weighed 5# 8oz, baby B was 4# 10oz.  I never had the steroid shot.  They were in the NICU for 12 days as feeders and growers; neither required oxygen.  Baby A was a "chugger" when she ate and had some episodes of bradycardia, which was what earned us few extra nights.  My girls are healthy, big almost one year olds now!

  • My water broke Christmas Eve morning, and after two rounds of steroid shots I was given Pitocin Christmas Day around 3:30. I had my girls vaginally at 34w3d, they missed Christmas by 27 and 57 min. Baby A was 4lb12oz Baby B was 4lb3oz They spent 2 weeks exacly in the NICU mostly as feeders and growers, they had a few issues of bradycardia, but always recovered on their own. They never needed oxygen. They are now 20 months old, and still little peanuts, but Happy and Healthier than ever!

  • Mine were 35 w 2 d.  I had a VERY easy pregnancy with no complications and all of a sudden my water broke out of nowhere.

My son was 5 lb 9 ounces and my daughter was 4 pounds 9 ounces via c-section.

My son was in the NICU for 1 week for the typical breathing issues (nothing major) and my daughter was in for 2 weeks because she wouldn't eat and they couldn't figure out what was wrong.  Still, 2 weeks in the NICU wasn't that bad at all considering they weren't even 38 weeks when they were released.

Mine were born just under 36 weeks at 35w5d.  Anthony was 5lb5oz and Ashleigh was 4lb14oz.  Ash went home with us still under 5lb.  Anthony dropped to 5lb1oz after his circumcision so he stayed in the NICU for 10 days.  He was having issues eating and had a feeding tube in.  He had wimpy white boy syndrome.  I still laugh at that.
Now, you'd never know he had any issues eating!  lol  Just like a boy, he wants to eat all the time and would if I let him.
Ash is a dainty eater and even though she didn't have issues at birth, now she eats very little and sometimes only wants to eat tomatoes.

You'll be great!  There are babies born at term who wind up in the NICU.  You just never know.  Don't get too stressed about it...that will add to your possible pre-e!

And...I went into labor naturally.  Anthony decided it was time to come out and my water broke the morning of Friday, July 13 at 7:33am.  They were then born exactly 3 hours later at 10:33 and 10:34am.  Had a c-section as they were both transverse.

  • Mine were born at 34 weeks and 1 day.  My blood pressure started to creep up starting just before I hit 33 weeks and I was going in for monitoring every couple of days.  Went in to be checked on Christmas Eve and I was in labor and 2cm.  Off to the hospital we went and I delivered them via a C-Section that afternoon.  Both of them were just under 5lbs and healthy.
  • My girls were born at 35 weeks 5 days. I went in for my usual NST and found out my blood pressure was high. They sent me to L&D to be monitored. They did a urine analysis and said there was protein in my urine so they would induce me the next morning.  I ended up having them naturally the next evening an hour and a half apart.

They were 4lbs 14oz and 5lbs 8oz. They had to stay in the NICU for 3wks. No major issues
just needed to gain weight, maintain their body temp. and be able to feed from a bottle.

    Good luck!!!
