Babies: 3 - 6 Months

no poop

DS hasn't pooped in a while.  I know this can be normal for a BF baby but when do I worry?

Re: no poop

  • my pedi said after 2-3 days you need to worry. When dd hadn't gone for two days she told me to take a rectal thermometer with some lubrication and " stimulate" her to go by makeing small circles just outside of her anus ( sorry to be graphic). she pooped a few hours later... it sounds terrible but I'd rather do that then give her a bowel stimulant. btw I'm a nurse so I understood why even tho it does sound kinda strange. But it worked!

  • I was told a week. After a full week it's time to worry. DS just did this and went five days! I was seriously nervous so I talked with my mom. She mentioned that babies get what we give them via breast milk. So I know that when I'm constipated I up my fiber and water intake. I've been peeing like a racehorse, guzzling so much water but he FINALLY went tonight and he was pretty happy about it as well.

  • my pedi said after 10 days to call her again if no poop.  the longest he ever went was 7 days.  she also said its not concerning if when they do go its still a watery consistency and not hard.

he went through a phase from 4-6 months where he would only go 1-2 a week.  now at 6 months he does once a day every morning.  the doc said its just their digestive system changing and maturing.

  • 7-10 days is normal for BF babies. DD went 10 days between poops several times. Once we started solids she started pooping a little more often, but even now she only goes every 3 days or so.
