Nuchal Translucency?

I'm scheduled for this Tuesday, and dying of nervousness. Since I'm a late March due dater, just wondering if anyone else has done this & what the results were. I'm 30, btw.

Re: Nuchal Translucency?

The Nuchal Translucency test is a combination of an ultrasound and a blood test. I had mine done last week. The ultrasound is pretty exciting because it will most likely be your first look at your baby. I couldn't believe how lifelike the baby looked. You could clearly identify the head, arms, and feet. You should get a print out of the pictures as well. After that you need to get blood drawn. The combination of the ultrasound (measures thickness of neck) and blood work will give your doctor "odds" of your baby having Down Syndrome. Your doctor should call with odds in a week or less. This was just my experience and I'm sure not all are the same, but good luck and enjoy your ultrasound!

  • It's pretty basic - they will do an ultrasound and do some measures on the neck and look for evidence of a nasal bone. That combined with the blood test will tell you what your risk is for certain chromosomal issues, like downs. Every age has a general level of risk for them, and this test allows them to refine your individual risk.

  • I had mine last week. I'm 35 and everything was within normal measurements.

  • Mine is on Monday (hooray!). Lots of folks on here have had them, and shared their results. I (obviously) hope the test results come back within the average range of odds, but if they don't I am prepped for what tests to ask about next. I'm just glad we live in an age where we can find out now, and be prepared!

  • I had mine on Sep 4th. They take measurements from crown to rump, measure heartbeat per second, and take other measurements as well. It was the first time I saw movement and also hands and legs. They took finger prick samples of blood the previous week, so I was able to get all of my results. I'm 41 and the screenings came back absolutely fine. I also optioned for the cell free DNA screening and that came back fine as well and as an added benefit I was able to see the gender of my baby boy! I wish you luck!

  • I had mine yesterday, late March mum. My u/s showed nothing obvious, I have to wait 2 weeks for the results as I opted for the DNA test from the blood draw instead of the protein markers. Newer option in NC and a chance insurance will not pay ($1500), but I'm all up for adding to the data set they have! Had a higher detection rate, still false positives and false negatives though. Only a small sample size, but we'll see. I'm actually not stressing out about it, as there is nothing you can do about the results, FYI I'm 37, will be 38 by the time I give birth. Try not to worry. It does seem overwhelming but even before the test I was a 1-2% chance of a chromosomal disorder, even at my age .... :)

  • I had mine last week... I'm also 30. They do a blood test and ultrasound. They will measure the cranial structures and the space between the amnion and the base of the baby's neck. The number they get will indicate risk for Trisomy's 13, 18, and 21. When combined with the blood results, they are pretty accurate. They will give you odds.... mine were 1 in 10,000. If you are nervous about your odds they may give you the option for further testing... they asked me if I wanted Harmony/MaterniT21, but likely it won't be covered by insurance.

The test does not test for neural tube defects, that will come later with the quad screen.
  • Just to add: it tests for so much more than just Down Syndrome (there is no 's' on Down by the way). Since you sound unsure of why youre getting it or what to wxpect, Maybe you should have asked your OB more about it. Also, there are many, many threads on here about it.
  • I had mine last week. Didn't realize that there was a possibility that baby wouldn't cooperate so the first time I was there for an hour and saw a lot of great baby movements, hiccups, etc but no go on the test. Went back 2 days later and had success after a 1/2 hr! Good luck, an enjoy watching your little bean do headstands!

    Anniversary
  • We had ours at the end of aug. i was so nervous i couldn't speap due to the huge lump in my throat. there may have also been scared tears beforehand....just maybe. During the scan, baby cooperated for the sonographer long enough to get her info, then when it was fun time, decided to wave at us & jump around :) gonna have my hands full I think! We didn't get a guess at the sex but the next week found out we aced all the tests! (Which is what we really cared about anyway) We've got better than avg (x2) odds. I'm 33 and a FTM so it was a huge relief! Good luck with everything!

  • I have mine on Tuesday too and am super nervous, but trying to remain positive. Im 32 with no history of birth defects in the fam but still can't help but worry. I wish the best for everyone! Keep us updated!
  • Mine is on Wednesday and I'm not really nervous. Nervous never helped anything my husband always says and for once I'm going with that :)
  • Mine is also on Tuesday.  Definitely nervous, as there is a history of miscarriage/stillbirth for genetic reasons on DH's side, but also excited.

RIP Dr. Irving Fishman - 10/1/19-7/25/10 - thank you for holding on for me.
You made my wedding day complete.

  • I'm 30 too! I had mine last week and results came in normal range very small % chance of downs, also it was great to see the baby moving around and waving it's little hands:)

Thanks for your spelling correction. I know all about the test-just asking about results. No need to take the grouch/ condescending tone.

That is SO amazing! What a huge bonus that you "met" your son : )

Congratulations! Now I'm going to pester the poor technician about the sex too.

Best of luck! Crossing fingers & toes...
  • I had mine the last week of August. It's not bad AT ALL! They drew more blood at my first prenatal appointment than they did at the NT appt.
I'm 29 and everything came back low-risk. I think it's normal to be nervous but it's nothing to be nervous about :)

During the u/s, I asked for a 3D look at the baby. It was unbelievable!! Even the 2D was breathtaking! The baby has grown so much and seeing him/her moving around is surreal. If anything, you should be looking forward to this opportunity to see your baby!

Obviously, there's always a chance tests come back with some concern. I know this is easy to say, but, cross that bridge when it comes. There's no point in worrying yourself sick at the "what-if's".

Good luck and let us know how it goes!!!
  • I have mine next Tuesday, I am due at the very end of March. I can't wait to see this LO again :) I am 31 but I have a feeling that everything will be just fine :)
  • We had ours done and thankfully everything came back normal. A friend of mine told me that it was a lot of fun, and it really was! Since they're taking more time to take measurements, we got the chance to watch the baby for a while and see the little bean move around which was really cool! We were even able to hear the heart beat for the first time. So try not to be nervous and just enjoy being able to see your little one again!

  • Thanks ladies! Heading out in a few hours. Will let you know how it goes. Xo
  • We had a good appt, but didn't see 3D or baby sex : (

Oh well, that's not what it's about, is it? We will not get our full results for a week or so, but I did get the actual NT measurement which is 1.7mm- totally & completely normal! So big yay for that one part of the puzzle. I know it's not over, but feeling optimistic...
  • So, did you get your results through?

    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • Nothing yet. Chomping at the bit here! It's been a week tomorrow, so I'll start harassing my doctor for the lab results then...
  • I'm sure you'll get them in a day or two. Fingers crossed!!

I dislike your tone as well. She's pointing out the obvious. It's like using retarded as a name to insult someone. It shows ignorance for the board and people with Down syndrome.
No one likes a spelling corrector /"you should have" -er. It just makes people feel sad or that they asked a dumb question. Pregnancy is hard, lonely and confusing. As far as I'm concerned there are no dumb questions, just meansey-pants people pissing on each others' rainbows. If you don't like a thread/ question, just ignore it, right? Don't crap on your fellow preggies. Sad face!

    Um...whatever.

So, got the test results back but it was very random. A nurse called and left a message saying that they "found the nasal bone," and that "everything looked good." No numbers, nothing scientific.

Have the rest of you heard?
  • I had mine last week and everything went well. If you google it, you can get lots of great info including comparison photos of a potential Downs baby vs. non-downs baby, and showing where the measurement at the back of the neck are.
    BabyFruit Ticker
  • So I had the DNA test so there were no numbers really, they just found no additional material at chromosomes 13, 18 or 21. So now I'm in the low risk category. I got a call directly from the genetic counsellor not a nurse. Maybe call the doc direct and ask for the numbers. Best of luck, sounds promising though.

  • I'm 38 and my doctor is referring me to a perinatologist to do some genetic testing because my NT blood work and age put me at a 1 in 138 chance of having a baby with Down Syndrome. My appointment is this Thursday and I'm completely freaked out!!!!
  • Hubs and I went in last week for ours and got the results today. My results were apparently different from everyone else, I was given numbers like 1/1,572 (which apparently means that my odds are one in 1,572, whereas just using my age my odds were more 1/203). We also did the Panorama test at 10 weeks and got numbers that were also like odds. The best part about the tests were seeing the baby and really getting the pregnant feeling and finding out the gender (from the Panorama, not the u/s).

Oh man!  I understand why you are freaked out. I know the numbers sound scary, but if you think about it,1 in 138 is not that bad. Birth control pills, for example, are generally listed as 99% effective, or 1 in 100. You have better odds than the pill!

I hope you get some more assurance at your perinatologist : ) Keep smiling!

Wow, awesome results! I wish I had your doctor with those precise numbers. Just the "meh, you'll be alright," attitude of mine is such a bummer.
  • My results came in just over a week after I took the test.  My doctor has a system where I can review all my test results online, so I actually got to download the form that the lab sent back with all the results.  All good news, thank God!
