The hospital refuses to recognize me as a partner on their paperwork. They continue to list me as a friend/neighbour... Even after being corrected.

Sorry that is happening. I actually changed hospital to find one that was same sex friendly.

That stinks. =( I would try different nurses. "Umm, excuse me, but this is incorrect on your forms." Maybe you'll get one that is more receptive and willing to change it? When we went in to have our baby, even though we are (and were at the time) legally married, and recognized by both state and federal, since our certificate hadn't come (still hasn't!! Grr!!) everything was under her maiden name. After staying in the hospital, they changed some of the things under her new name, but some things were still maiden name (like hospital band). I wonder if they would have been so quick to change things if the baby didn't have my last name, and her legal, new name.

Oh man does that make my blood boil. I am so sorry you two have to deal with this! Is there perhaps another hospital in your area that you could switch to that might be better? I realize you should not have to switch, and they should be the ones to change, but with something as monumental as giving birth, it might be a better, less stressful overall experience for you both to be in a place where you don't have to fight this battle... Keep us posted. And let us know if there is an address/email where we can all send a letter about them correcting their policy/forms!

Where are you located? I see the "not Aboriginal" tag above on the paperwork, which triggers me to think you might be in Canada....

if so I would DEFINITELY throw a HUGE stink. So not okay after all of the charter challenges....

Seriously? Ugh, that level of disrespect really gets under my skin. How can people treat same-sex couples like they're virtual strangers to each other? That piece of paper basically says "You're not important to this person so if something happens it doesn't really matter if you're there or not." I would have lost it. I do not do well with things like this and I imagine I would have started throwing things at the bigot who made that decision.

I really, really hope you can find a new hospital. At this point I don't know if it's even worth dealing with these jerks, unless you really don't have another option...

Thanks for the responses! I was pretty annoyed over the whole thing. We are in Australia and unfortunately we have just elected a priminister who is a fundamentalist Christian and doesn't believe gays should be married or have children. (We obviously didnt vote for him)

Oh well... Our society is changing, slowly but we certainly go through these types of situations all the time.

I send my DP back up to see the front staff and she asked them to change it yet again. To which she replied that it was just their systems and doesn't make a difference what I'm listed as. My DP explained that it does matter to us so she changed it to partner.

We can't change hospitals, we have no other options. You must go to the hospital in your district so unless we move house, we are stuck with them.

Times will change... Just have to wait
