Re: GTKY 9/13/13 Edition

  • This morning was an early morning because my poor wife fractured her foot while on duty yesterday :( She was okay last night, but I guess she was in pain this morning so she woke me up to help her elevate her foot and take more motrin. My poor wife!!

    1. Do you have a tattoo? Bonus: PIP it! I do not. Does it count that I want one? That I am addicted to tattoo shows?
    2. What is something new you have tried or learned about lately? An activity, book, movie, recipe, anything new to you! I am trying more gluten free recipes on the advice of our Acupuncturist. I made some amazing peanut butter cookies with only peanut butter, an egg, sugar and vanilla. They are a hit.
    3. Tell us about your home - do you live in a house, apartment? Tell us more! Bonus: PIP it! We rent a ranch style home in the middle of the country. We LOVE it. On one side is a corn field and the other a bean field. We have one neighbor and she is never home. There is a business on the property, but they are incredibly quiet. We never need a clock because we always know when it is 8am, noon and pm. The picture is our view from the living room...

    image

    4. What kind of car do you have? Do you like it? We have an SUV and a Truck. I love the suv, but it is giving us some issues. I still love it.
    5. What is your favorite snack? By far, cheese and crackers. The sharper the cheese, the better. Organic, of course.
    6. If you were going to be isolated for a month but allowed to bring up to 5 albums/CD's with you, what would you bring? I'm a nerd, so I would need at least 2 seasons of Glee. Then I would need the Rock of Ages soundtrack because I can picture the entire movie in my head. I would throw in some classical for relaxation and for the 5th album, I would probably bring another movie soundtrack like Mama Mia.
    7. Seen any good movies lately? Theatre or on TV/internet? Tell us more! Yes! The Heat. Excellent. We saw it in the theater and it was the funniest movie I have seen in years.
    8. What is something you hope to improve upon as a parent that your parents didn't do so well? I want to make my kid feel special and loved. I was the middle kid. The only one that didn't get in trouble. I got straight A's. I graduated with honors, went to undergrad and then graduated in the top of my law school class...I think they are more proud that my brothers have kids. I want my kid to grow up having responsibilities and respect; I want my kid to earn things and know that they are not entitled, BUT, I also want my kid to have self worth, too.
    9. What's for dinner? We are having friends over tonight and I believe we are taking them to our favorite local italian place with the world's best bread sticks.
    10. Weekend plans? What are you up to? I got 3 positive opks last night and a positive today, as well as a "peak" on the fertility monitor. We are doing our second and third ICI for this cycle on Friday and Sunday. We may actually have good timing!

And as always, any PIP of your choice as a bonus!
You're probably sick of seeing my hiking pics, but I had to post this one. On our second full day of hiking, we moved away from the shoreline and into the forest. We had no idea how storybook like this terrain and scenery would be. The trees were gigantic and some were wrapped around giant rocks. It was very, very cool.

To put it into perspective...here is my wife hiking next to these rocks...

    1. Do you have a tattoo? Bonus: PIP it!
Yes.  Cliche - Chinese symbols on my shoulder blade.  Love the meaning - equality, inner strength, and love.  I don't have a good picture of it.

    2. What is something new you have tried or learned about lately? An activity, book, movie, recipe, anything new to you!
Yoga!  I'm a wannabe hippie/new-age person.  I'm naturally high strung, but I'm trying to be more in tune with my body, it's purpose, and how it can serve me and how I can serve it.

    3. Tell us about your home - do you live in a house, apartment? Tell us more! Bonus: PIP it!
We live in a 2-bedroom condo.  I bought it in 2008 after Z and I had been dating less than a year - she didn't move int until a few months later.  It was the perfect size for just me!  We have quickly outgrown it.  Our goal is to get into a house before baby #2, which hopefully is only a couple years away.

    4. What kind of car do you have? Do you like it?
Nissan Sentra.  I really don't like it.  I totaled my car in 2008 in the same month as I was buying my house.  I had very little extra income (was a solo income at that time), so I needed something that was very cost efficient and I had to make a decision quickly.  It's paid off, so now I just need to decide when to get a new one.  Think we'll wait until we start paying for day care to get a better idea of what our budget can afford.

    5. What is your favorite snack?
    Peanut butter and banana.  Fruit.

    6. If you were going to be isolated for a month but allowed to bring up to 5 albums/CD's with you, what would you bring?
I feel like a bad lesbian and Austinite, but I don't really know.  I enjoy music, but I'm not a I-can't-live-without-it kind of person.  Z is the big music lover in our house.  She probably couldn't pick out 5 albums - she would probably pick her top 5 Pandora stations. She loves to sing (not well!) and dance.

    7. Seen any good movies lately? Theatre or on TV/internet? Tell us more!
My mom and I went to see The Spectacular Now in the theatre a week or two ago.  I thought it was an honest and sobering take on the classic coming of age story.  It's not one of those movies you really "enjoy," rather a movie you appreciate.  Same with What Maisie Knew (rented it recently).

    8. What is something you hope to improve upon as a parent that your parents didn't do so well?
Part A - A couple of things.  1) Neither one of my parents was physically active.  My mom has probably never been more than 130lbs or so in my entire life and has always had very good eating habits, but she never exercised.  Of course, she was raising 3 kids just 36 months apart in age, so I don't know how she would have fit it in!  My dad is overweight and in recent years has developed heart disease and diabetes - he's had a heart attack and both hips replaced.  And, he's a doctor no less!  Argh.  He has very poor control when it comes to eating and he was never very active either.  Seeing the impact my dad's weight has had on his health is such a motivator to me to model good eating habits and emphasizing the importance of physical activity to our kiddos.  I would rather them not wait until later in life (like it happened for me) for the light bulb to go off about the importance of taking care of their bodies.  2) I am a carbon copy of my mom. Growing up, my mom was very high strung, which wasn't pleasant.  She is so much more relaxed and laid-back these days.  Again, I'm sure having 3 kids so close in age had something to do with it.  I am so much like my mom, though, that I really need to keep myself in check about what is important and what isn't.  I think the fact that I'm having kids several years later in life than my mom helps give me a better perspective.
Part B - My parents did way more right than they did wrong, so I wanted to address just a few things that my parents did really well that I just hope I can replicate.  My parents never failed to let me know how much they loved me, how proud they were of me, and how much they support me.  They taught me the value of education, hard work, honesty, and integrity.  My brother, sister, and I (and my little sister who is just my dad's) have all turned out to be responsible, hard working, caring individuals.  Not without our faults, of course, but my parents did a very good job, if I do say so myself. :)

    9. What's for dinner?
Have no idea.  We're out of leftovers, so we'll either eat out or get creative in the kitchen!

    10. Weekend plans? What are you up to?
Watching football tomorrow.  Alabama is my alma mater and they are playing Texas A&M.  Big game if you're into such things. :)  Going to brunch with my friend on Sunday.  She's the one getting married in January and we're going to check out a piano player that she may book for her reception.  In between those things, I'll go to yoga and hopefully clean out a closet or two.

And as always, any PIP of your choice as a bonus!
I've posted a lot of pics this week, so I'm digging into the vault for this one!  This pic is from May 2012 during our trip to Puerto Vallarta.

    1. Do you have a tattoo? Bonus: PIP it!

I don't!  When I was in college, I really wanted to get the f-holes of a violin tattooed on my back, a la Man Ray's Le Violon d'Ingres (I played the viola for ten years).  But because it was going to be pricey, I could never manage to justify the cost to myself.  I did a lot of body piercing instead.

    2. What is something new you have tried or learned about lately? An activity, book, movie, recipe, anything new to you!

I grew ground cherries (sometimes called husk cherries) in my garden this year for the first time.  I had heard of them before but had never eaten one as they are hard to find in markets around here, but I was intrigued because I love actual cherries.  So when I saw seedlings at a nursery, I picked up two.  They were incredibly easy to grow and very successful...but I have to say I'm not a huge fan of them.  I'm eating this year's crop but I don't think I"ll be growing them again.

    3. Tell us about your home - do you live in a house, apartment? Tell us more! Bonus: PIP it!

I actually live in the house I grew up in.  We bought it from my father four years ago.  It's a great old house, built in 1924, a little big for us right now but we are trying to fill it.  :)

    4. What kind of car do you have? Do you like it?

This is a complicated question.  We bought a Subaru Forester 5 years ago, and that is supposed to be "my" car.  But when we moved back to the Boston area, it made more sense for my wife to drive the (dependable) Subaru to work and for me to drive her (older, body-damaged) car because I was only taking it to a subway station and leaving it in a garage all day (and because I can get to work entirely on public transit if it dies on me).  Thus, I drive a 1999 Nissan Altima I did not pick out and I am not a fan.  We are getting me a new car sometime before the snow comes -- I'm thinking Subaru Impreza hatchback.  Yes, we are a Lesbaru family.

    5. What is your favorite snack?

A really good apple with peanut butter would be up there.  Ditto a really good apple with really good sharp cheddar cheese or aged gouda.

    6. If you were going to be isolated for a month but allowed to bring up to 5 albums/CD's with you, what would you bring?

The Very Best of Otis Redding, Life's Rich Pageant by REM, Bach's Cello Concertos, Manos or Strand by the Spinanes, and....something folky I can't quite decided on.

    7. Seen any good movies lately? Theatre or on TV/internet? Tell us more!

I recently rented Gangs of New York and Precious from Netflix (yes, I am behind the times).  I liked both (though I liked Precious more).  I also rented Adam's Rib, from 1949, with Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn.  It was sort of an accident but quite good.  The last movie I saw in the theater was The Heat, which was funny.

    8. What is something you hope to improve upon as a parent that your parents didn't do so well?

My parents were overweight and did not seem very concerned about what they (or we) ate.  My mom was a SAHM for most of my childhood and cooked a lot from scratch, but there is a strong familial sweet tooth (I like to call it a sweet fang) and we definitely ate too much of certain things.  We were also not very athletic and so once I stopped playing outside with the neighborhood kids (preteen?), I didn't get a lot of exercise.  While I want my kids to love food and cooking like we do, I also want them to understand how that relates to health and to learn the concept of moderation.

    9. What's for dinner?

No idea!  My wife just got home after being away for business most of the week, so we are out of food and haven't really discussed our plans.

    10. Weekend plans? What are you up to?

Nothing, which is fantastic.  My wife's been in Dallas on business all week and I've been fending for myself on crutches -- we are both pooped.  I just want to hang out with her, read books, watch TV, and sleep.

    1.       Nope. No tattoos for me.

    2.       I recently tried to teach myself to knit. It didn’t go well.

    3.       We bought our house just about 4 years ago. It is a 200 yr old house just outside the city limits of Philadelphia. The same family had owned it since it was built, so we are the first people outside of that family to ever own it. The house hadn’t been updated at all in about 40 years, so we did 6 weeks of pretty intense renovation before we moved in. We didn’t move any walls or change any electrical or plumbing, but there was not a single surface that was not touched. All new flooring, new paint in every room, we ripped out the kitchen and started over, new countertops in bathrooms and laundry room, new light fixtures, crown molding… it was A LOT of work, but it was so worth it.

The first picture attached is the outside of the house – totally unimpressive, I know.

The second picture is the kitchen before, and the third picture is the kitchen after.

The fourth picture is the family room after.

I could share before and after pictures all day… so I just picked my favorite two rooms which are the kitchen and the family room. J

The house is small, but it has been a great first house for us. We totally got to customize it, it was a good deal financially, it is only 15 minutes from downtown... we hope to move in the next 2-3 years to a larger family home and hopefully make a nice little profit on this house when we sell it. We consider it to be kind of like a flip that we lived in for a while!

    4.       2010 Nissan Rogue. I love it!

    5.       Anything involving peanut butter. Yum!

    6.       This is a hard question b/c I LOVE music and I have super diverse taste… if forced to pic 5, I think it would be one from each genre/category I enjoy most, soooo:

    ·         Melissa Etheridge, Skin

    ·         Rent Soundtrack

    ·         Journey, Greatest Hits

    ·         Eagle-Eye Cherry, Desireless

    ·         Sugarland, Enjoy the Ride

    7.       I actually haven’t seen any good movies lately, but I am looking for recommendations for this weekend. Excited to see what everyone has to say about this one!

    8.       I hope to make sure that each of our children feels loved/appreciated/recognized equally – or as much as possible. I am one of four kids, and my sisters and I have always struggled a bit with competing with each other for positive attention. My youngest sister and I also both feel strongly that our middle sister is the favorite. We all love each other, don’t get me wrong… but when I was growing up, I really struggled with feeling valued compared to my siblings. I really hope to avoid that dynamic with our children…

    9.       I have NO idea what is for dinner. I have been bad and haven’t cooked at all in about 3 weeks. IVF has taken over my life a bit and the one thing I have really let go as a result is cooking dinner every night. I ALMOST cooked last night. Even had ingredients on the counter… then I got flustered and overheated and annoyed, so I packed everything back up in the fridge and went to the grocery store around the corner and came back with ready-made soup and salad. Ha!

    10.   Well… let’s see… weekend plans…. Oh, I know, hopefully getting knocked up on Sunday! J <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

    Me - 30, My wife - 31 , Together for 10 yrs - Married August 2012

    5 medicated IUIs w/ RE (March - July 2013) = BFN

    Fresh IVF Cycle in September 2013 resulted in 18 mature eggs, 16 fertilized, 12 made it to day 5. Transfer of 2 Grade A blastocysts on 9/15/13, and 10 embryos in the freezer!      *****BFP on 9/25/13 - betas: @10dp5dt = 232; @12dp5dt = 465; @15dp5dt = 1,581   *********William George born June 4, 2014*********
  • 1. Do you have a tattoo? Bonus: PIP it!
Yes.  I have a star - it was one of those "yay!  I'm 18! Let's be rebellious!" moments.

    2. What is something new you have tried or learned about lately? An activity, book, movie, recipe, anything new to you!
B and I are starting to plan out our meals for the week.  Every weekend we sit down and fill out the menu board (Thank you pinterest!!).  I really love it.  It helps a ton with grocery shopping and we always try to make up meals for the week during the less busy weekend times.

    3. Tell us about your home - do you live in a house, apartment? Tell us more! Bonus: PIP it!
We currently live in a brand new (3 months old) 2 bedroom apartment.  Unfortunately, the apartment has mold in it that is attacking our clothes and shoes.  Earlier this month we put an offer in on a 3 bedroom house and should be closing September 30th.  Please cross your fingers that everything goes well!

    4. What kind of car do you have? Do you like it?
I drive a Hyundai Elantra.  I've always loved my car, but this year B got a Honda Civic and now I realize how much I love her car better!  Too bad there's no switching her :)

    5. What is your favorite snack?
    Lately, Oreos.  Preferably double stuffed!

    6. If you were going to be isolated for a month but allowed to bring up to 5 albums/CD's with you, what would you bring?
I'm terrible at finding new music and my taste in music seems to be all over.  I really love the mixed cds B makes for our roadtrips, so I will take 5 of those!

    7. Seen any good movies lately? Theatre or on TV/internet? Tell us more!
I know we've seen quite a few movies lately, but honestly I can't name a single one right now!  Hmm... I guess that must mean that they weren't that good! :)

    8. What is something you hope to improve upon as a parent that your parents didn't do so well?
Both my parents and B's parents (while they were together) fought in front of their kids.  I really want to try extra hard to not fight in front of our kids.

    9. What's for dinner?
Sloppy Joes. I forgot to take hamburger out, so hopefully B remembered!

    10. Weekend plans? What are you up to?
Watching scary Friday the 13th movies tonight.  Farmer's Market, meeting up with a friend and her new baby, and then B's mom's one year cancer free celebration.  Sunday the packers play so B will watch them probably while I work.

And as always, any PIP of your choice as a bonus!
N just turned 7 months yesterday!

  • 1. Do you have a tattoo? Bonus: PIP it!
I have 6 tattoos! A heart and moon on my ankle (my first at 18), a set of footprints on my hip (for the poem "Footprints") as a memorial tattoo for my dad, a sorority symbol on my other hip, a manatee on my ankle (was a cover up, but I absolutely love manatees and they have a lot of symbolism for me), "Be Brave" on the top of my foot (last words my Papa and I said to each other before he died), and a skeleton key with a rainbow heart on my chest (K has the lock).

image there is the skeleton key :)

    2. What is something new you have tried or learned about lately? An activity, book, movie, recipe, anything new to you!
In my quest to eat healthier, I have tried so many more vegetables lately. I have come a long way from broccoli and carrots.

    3. Tell us about your home - do you live in a house, apartment? Tell us more! Bonus: PIP it!
K and I live in a 3 bedroom house in the suburbs. Here is the screen shot from Google Maps lol
    image

    4. What kind of car do you have? Do you like it?
I have a 2012 Green Jeep Patriot. I love it, but I wish it got better gas mileage!

    5. What is your favorite snack?
Cheese! (Well it's really chips & dip, but I'm trying to eat healthier)

    6. If you were going to be isolated for a month but allowed to bring up to 5 albums/CD's with you, what would you bring?
Oh my gosh this would be so difficult. I would probably create 5 mix cds with my favorite songs.

    7. Seen any good movies lately? Theatre or on TV/internet? Tell us more!
Lee Daniel's "The Butler" was amazing! I loved it! I laughed and cried and thought it was done very very well.

    8. What is something you hope to improve upon as a parent that your parents didn't do so well?
My mom was amazing! I don't even know, I suppose focus on work less to spend more time with my kids (But I definitely understand WHY she worked so hard and so much)

    9. What's for dinner?
    Umm tacos maybe?

    10. Weekend plans? What are you up to?
There is a little art/music festival in the gay community in the area this weekend. I also hope we can stop at a cider mill!!!

    Happy Friday!

    1) No tats.  Never really been interested in them!

    2) I joined the Y recently!  While I am not *entirely* new to gyms (I used to be quite the gym rat when I was a teen) I am new to the Y here in town.  I'm glad we checked it out.  It'll be good for DP and I to get off our duffs and go to the gym rather than sitting on the couch all night like we normally do.

    3) We live in a townhouse style condo.  It'll make a great rental one day if we choose to do that later on... But for now it's nice for our lifestyle.  We want to stay in it at least 4 more years if we can manage because it's affordable and neither of us feels claustraphobic yet.  We'll want to leave when we have kids big enough to run around, though.

    4) I own an old Ford Focus and we recently bought a new Hyundai Accent.  The Ford is okay.  It doesn't have AC anymore but I don't have to make payments on it and it works fine.  I'll probably drive it until it's dead.  The Hyundai's decent - I'm unimpressed with the cheap body though.  We hit a curb and the damned bumper fell off and now they want us to pay $900 to replace it.  What?!  Who hits a curb and has to replace the whole bumper?  *grumble*

    5) My favorite snack is cheese, crackers, and fruit.

    6) I'd probably take 5 general "greatest hits" CDs from the late 90's and early 00's.

    7) I saw Meet the Millers recently.  It was pretty funny but I'd recommend seeing it at home on your TV.  Just a typical romantic comedy with a little bit of action.

    8) I will never criticize my body in front of my kids.  My mom did that CONSTANTLY and I developed a complex when I was a teen.  I went on unhealthy diets and took pills... it was bad.  Now my mom is baffled because I'm fat 'n happy, but I learned I had to get over my body issues if I ever wanted to make peace with myself.  Now I wish I was thinner, for health reasons.  I'm taking steps to become more active and healthy so my kids see what a balanced lifestyle looks like, rather than the extremes I experienced as a kid.

    9) Dinner?  Um... Er... maybe lasagna?  Depends on how I feel later :)

    10) Weekend plans: I'm going out with some friends tonight, then I'm relaxing tomorrow.  Sunday I have a work meeting and then I have to do my chores.

  • Mobile bumping so lets see how this works out.
    1. I have 3 the one on my back is from shoulder to shoulder and down to mid back of flowers and a cross. It needs to be colored. I figured now I will just let my littles color it with markers when they are old enough ha!
This a picture of the other two my chest says "heart of stone" (don't ask ha) the other is a tiger lily that a good friend drew for my 18th birthday.

    2. Lately the only new thing I have been trying to learn is how to eat a little healthier and how to make sure I don't get naseous in the mornings before leaving for work.

    3. We own our tiny little house. It's a 2 bed 1 bath, and not our forever home. It's 70 years old and we are only the 2nd owners. We have remodeled the bathroom and the kitchen. We love our neighbors and our backyard and wish the house was bigger for a family.

    4. I drive a Toyota Tacoma. That will be changing before the baby comes because its not kid friendly. I don't love spending a ton of money on a fancy car so I will probably get a Kia sorrento.

    5. My favorite snack right now is frosted flakes straight out of the box. Do not healthy but I will take whatever I can that doesn't make me feel sick just thinking about it.

    6. I'm a music lover I couldn't pick 5 albums. I will choose to take 5 mixed CDs as well!

    7. We watch a lot of documentaries in our house. None recently that I would rave about. We are excited for CMT crossroads of Stevie nicks and lady A tonight. We made a date out of it and hopefully I can convince K for take out Chinese!

    8. I love @herbabymamma's answer. I have some awful credit that I'm trying to fix. It's getting better but I wish at 18 I didn't know what a credit card was. I have some the worst credit and ks credit is nearly perfect! K will definitely teach them the ropes!

    9. Hopefully take out Chinese but I have a feeling from Ks text I just got it will be Mexican :)

    10. No plans this weekend except for cleaning out closets and trading summer clothes for fall clothes in the shed :)

    Bonus PIP
Packing up the car on our last vacation when we went to MOAB!

  • 1.  I have several tattoos.  Got my first when I was 18 because I could.  I haven't gotten one in about 10 years and my last one was pac-man chasing ghosts and rainbow colored dots around my ankle.  The tattoo guy seemed confused, but I thought it was unique and festive!  I have an armband and a "tramp stamp" lol.  They are all easily hidden easily which is good for work

    2.  Something new I have tried...being pregnant!  It has been a very interesting process and adventure.  I am a biology major, and with my career I know a lot about the good, bad and ugly with being pregnant and the first year of a baby's life.  I try to not be all crazy about things but it is hard.  My doctor understands and has really helped me not worry about all the what ifs that can happen.  I have thresholds that I have crossed, and there are still a few more that I think about that scare me.  But my bean is growing great and I bought a fetal doppler so I can hear his little heart beating away when ever I want to :)

    3.  I rent my home.  It is not very big, two bedrooms, one bath.  But it has a great kitchen, and the backyard is huge!  My neighbors don't live where I can see and hear everything that they do.  It is an older house (50 years old-ish), on the edge of a historic section of the town that I live in.  I absolutely LOVE old victorian homes and someday I really want to own one!

    4.  I have a 2005 Mazda Tribute (SUV), that is paid off!  It's the first car I have paid off and it is so awesome to not have a car payment to worry about.  It has been a great vehicle as well.

    5.  My favorite snack is cheese and avocados.  Mmmm, I have an avocado sitting on my desk right now!!

    6.  5 albums...I really love P!nks new album so that one for sure, Kenny Chesney- Welcome to the fishbowl and Hemingway's Whiskey, some good 80's-90's mix albums

    7.  Redbox and I are best friends!  I recently rented Oblivion and The Iceman, both of which were really good.  The last movies I saw at the theater were The Conjuring and World War Z, and they were both awesome!!  I love movies lol :)

    8.  I think that my mother did a really good job raising me and my two brothers.  We were strong willed children, and she just rolled with the punches.  The hardest time that we went through was when I came out to her when I was 17 (20 years ago).  It was hard because I am her only daughter.  We had to work through a lot of things and it took several years, but now it isn't even a think which is really great.  My mother is my greatest fan!  I guess I would have to say I would try to improve on being accepting of my child, and not be a helicopter parent.  I think you learn the best lessons by making mistakes, but having a soft place to land when you fall flat on your back, so that you don't break.  I learned this from my mother :)

    9.  Dinner is going to be a microwave dinner (easiest way to eat while at work), and lots of fruits and veggies that I bring to work daily.  I eat the best when I am working.

    10.  My weekend plans are work....

My PIP is my nephew Zach and I a couple of years ago.  He loves superheros...all of them and was wearing a spiderman costume that day.  He is my little buddy!

  • 1. Do you have a tattoo? Bonus: PIP it!
I have a circle on the inside of my left forearm. I got it in 2007 when I moved to Toronto. It means a lot of things to me including: simplicity and wholeness, a rejection of simple binaries, and a commitment to non-linear paths in life. One of the reasons I chose a circle is because when I was experimenting with different tattoo ideas I realized that a circle is the one thing the women's symbol, men's symbol, and trans symbols have in common.
    >2. What is something new you have tried or learned about lately? An activity, book, movie, recipe, anything new to you!
I have tried walking as a form of exercise as opposed to just a recreation or method or transit.

    3. Tell us about your home - do you live in a house, apartment? Tell us more! Bonus: PIP it!

We currently live in a small three bedroom house that we rent. At the end of the month we are moving to a two bedroom plus sunroom apartment. We will have access to an indoor pool, exercise room, and fenced leash free dog run which will help make up for moving out of a house. We will also have a dishwasher and 1.5 baths!!

    4. What kind of car do you have? Do you like it?

We have a 2008 Kia Rondo, which is technically a midsize station wagon but looks more like a crossover. We like it quite a bit except for the turning radius and how it handles curves.

    5. What is your favorite snack?

I'm with a lot of others in saying cheese!

    6. If you were going to be isolated for a month but allowed to bring up to 5 albums/CD's with you, what would you bring?

I enjoy music but I'm not a big music person. M would probably have much more to say on this!
The must have on my list is Melissa Etheridge's album "Lucky".
I would also like the Dar Williams live album and a Kate Reid album.
    Maybe the soundtrack to Chicago?
And the Beatles One album or their '62-'66 two cd set.

    7. Seen any good movies lately? Theatre or on TV/internet? Tell us more!

The best we have seen is the Heat. The worst is This is the End. The most recent is the World's End, which we enjoyed.

    8. What is something you hope to improve upon as a parent that your parents didn't do so well?

To be honest, my parents did an absolutely fantastic job of raising me and my brothers. Because of my own issues of worrying that I am bad and will disappoint people, I will try to make sure that my kids know that it is totally fine to mess up and make mistakes. I don't blame my parents for my issues with this but I may be more conscious of it than they were.

    9. What's for dinner?

I'm babysitting so I'm eating what the family is eating. Not sure what that is.

    10. Weekend plans? What are you up to?
Tomorrow I'm going to watch my baseball teammate's fast pitch softball games tomorrow. And on Sunday we have our (chosen family) nephew Elijah's third birthday party.

And as always, any PIP of your choice as a bonus! :)
I'm on my phone so I can't PIP

    1. Do you have a tattoo? Bonus: PIP it! - Yes, it's on the right side in my bikini line (meaning you can't see it if I'm wearing a bathing suit).
    2. What is something new you have tried or learned about lately? An activity, book, movie, recipe, anything new to you! - Aside from the skills of this gypsy lifestyle??  Not sure... Looking forward to more creativity soon.
    3. Tell us about your home - do you live in a house, apartment? Tell us more! Bonus: PIP it! - LOL, to be determined. We are looking for a home to rent, preferably a house with 3+ bedrooms and 2 bathrooms and a large yard with at least some shade. Hardwood floors, gas range and updates a plus.  Though depending on area we may be compromising on a thing or two. We're going around to open houses tomorrow.
    4. What kind of car do you have? Do you like it? - 2012 Hyundai Sonata, it's EV's car. I will probably be getting an older mini-van in the next 6 months.  Yipppeee....

    6. If you were going to be isolated for a month but allowed to bring up to 5 albums/CD's with you, what would you bring? Oh no....  I'm not good at music questions. I listen to the Spotify radio stations that EV makes :-) I love world music and some current emo music and other pop music.
    7. Seen any good movies lately? Theatre or on TV/internet? Tell us more! Last movie we went to see was END OF THE WORLD, I like the director's other movies and I like this one too - British humor with a twist.
    8. What is something you hope to improve upon as a parent that your parents didn't do so well? Being more affectionate and demonstrative. Also being flexible and adventurist. (My parents are the "slow and steady" types)
    9. What's for dinner? I'm in the mood for Mexican but I haven't proposed it yet.
    10. Weekend plans? What are you up to? Open Houses, hanging out with friends on Saturday and Sunday and getting EV interview ready.

  • 1. Do you have a tattoo? Bonus: PIP it!
I have 3 tatoos, two of them I have gotten since being with my wife.  The one pictured I got in March 2011.  It was in honor of my grand father who passed away 10 years ago yesterday.  He came out late in life and was big in the theater for many years.
    image
    2. What is something new you have tried or learned about lately? An activity, book, movie, recipe, anything new to you!
I can't think of anything off hand

    3. Tell us about your home - do you live in a house, apartment? Tell us more! Bonus: PIP it!
We live in an apartment.  Its a townhouse, with two large bedrooms, fireplace and garage.  The only thing missing is a basement.  We share a large patio with another lesbian couple and have cook outs and bonfires on pretty much a weekly basis.  We are very lucky to have great neighbors.  The follow picture is movie night on the patio.  It was awesome!
    image

    4. What kind of car do you have? Do you like it?
We have two cars that both suck!  One is a 2000 Nissan Maxima and we got just a few years ago, but its almost paid off.  The other is a 2002 Kia Optima and its paid off and is barely holding on.  We don't want big car payments, so we are holding out for now on a new one.

    5. What is your favorite snack?
I love to snack!  I love popcorn, ice cream, brownies, not really a lot of chips though

    6. If you were going to be isolated for a month but allowed to bring up to 5 albums/CD's with you, what would you bring?
Don't judge me because I love country music!  I don't know the names of the CD's (because I haven't bought one in years)  I just know a few artists I could listen to over and over.
    Rascall Flats
    Reba Entire
    Melissa Etheridge
    Garth Brooks
    Pink

    7. Seen any good movies lately? Theatre or on TV/internet? Tell us more!
We just watched 42 about Jackie Robinson, it was pretty good

    8. What is something you hope to improve upon as a parent that your parents didn't do so well?
be more present, emotionally available and consistent

    9. What's for dinner?
We had a late lunch and celebrated our anniversary by going out for Mexican

    10. Weekend plans? What are you up to?
After dinner we had movie night in.  Tomorrow we are babysitting and Sunday we have an appointment with my RE and then my DW softball game

I thought I would share one of my favorite pictures.  This was one of our engagement pictures for a few years ago.

  • 1. Do you have a tattoo? Bonus: PIP it!
Oh gosh. Yes, two. Before "yoloing" was cool, I got my first right after sept 11th 2001 and got a tramp stamp. Sigh. It's fine and all but I'm glad I don't have to see it all the time. The second came in HI after the wedding on my ankle. I'm really not someone who carries tatoos off well so I think im done.

    2. What is something new you have tried or learned about lately? An activity, book, movie, recipe, anything new to you!
Roasted beets. Not as bad as I thought.

    3. Tell us about your home - do you live in a house, apartment? Tell us more!
We just moved to a new house in may. We're settled in just in time for this baby.

    4. What kind of car do you have? Do you like it? Jeep. I got it last year for a great deal and. I love it!

    5. What is your favorite snack? I have to agree with most. I have an unhealthy obsession with cheese and have my whole life!

    6. If you were going to be isolated for a month but allowed to bring up to 5 albums/CD's with you, what would you bring? Well, I was that crazy girl who always had mixes, the "perfect" mixes for any occasion, for any artist, etc. I even had playlists every month for along time. That being said, I would most likely choose some of these playlists, but if I was forced to choose actual albums... Today it would be 1200 curfews, IG, out there live, Dar, the story, Brandi carlile, led zeppelin 3, rent original cast recording.

    7. Seen any good movies lately? Theatre or on TV/internet? Tell us more!
Nothing that stands out to be honest. :/. And I really like movies!

    8. What is something you hope to improve upon as a parent that your parents didn't do so well?
Practice unconditional love. And create an environment that fosters open communication. There were many days an times even now that things go unsaid. I just never want our kids to be censored with us if they don't want to be.

    9. What's for dinner?
I always hold out hope for pizza :)

    10. Weekend plans? What are you up to? Trying to get some stuff done before potentially going into labor. Haha. Car stuff, laundry, and probably keeping my feet up. More and more people are saying get rest and stay off my feet. I think I'll try to heed the warnings.

  • Ok I need to stop writing such hard questions!

    1.      I have two tattoos – one is pretty big across my low back (a “tramp banner” as J calls it) and the other is small and on the inside of my wrist – both are yoga-related. The big one is a lotus flower I got after finishing Bikram Yoga School (9 weeks of yoga-hell); I love it but I only see it in standing-separate-leg-stretching pose J. The other is the Sanskrit for Camel Pose, which was a pose I had a total life epiphany in one day thanks to an amazing teacher. Also it was meant to detract a little from my post-weight loss plastic surgery scar.

    image

    2.      I am trying to master the Liege Waffle - I think I've got it down! J is going to sell them at two of her shops...I think. Here's the link to the recipe I'm using. Not a health food.

    3.      We live in a 1919 Craftsman bungalow, 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom 990 sq. ft. house in the Fremont neighborhood of Seattle. I bought it with my (ahem) ex-wife in 2001 though I had no business doing so money-wise, it was the best risk I ever took! I could never afford my house today – and J loves it. I was so glad when we met that she rented. I worried I’d have to fight over “whose house will we live in.” We keep trying to move, but re-fi’d recently after J said to me “Honey, we are not ‘big house’ people – let’s stop trying to be.’ And so, we will have a cozy home when we have kids.

    image

    4.      I have a hybrid hatchback (it’s the entry-level Lexus, but I swear I’m not a d-bag, I just liked it WAY more than the prius and the cost was not much different). J has the requisite Seattle Lesbaru, a blue Forester she hauls a world of stuff around in for her businesses. I like mine ok, to be honest, I think I want a sedan again next time, and before this I had 5 VW’s in a row and kinda miss that German car feeling.

    5.      Cheese and crackers with some grapes and almonds is my go-to snack. Chips and salsa are my favorite that I don’t keep in the house for obvious reasons J.

    6.      Ok this is hard, and I meant to say “no mixes!” but – here are mine:

    ·        Radiohead’s Ok Computer

    ·        U2’s Unforgettable Fire

    ·        The National’s High Violet

    ·        Sigur Ros’ Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust

    ·        Alt-J’s An Awesome Wave

    7.      We saw Elysiam in the theater last weekend and I liked it more than expected. A very obvious statement about class in America. Also we are working through Ken Burns’ The Dust Bowl on Netflix. I feel like I’m in history class, but really enjoying it as it’s quite well done. J pointed out that I obviously didn’t pay attention when reading The Grapes of Wrath in high school or I’d already know a lot about that time/place. Whoops.

    8.      A few things…being predictable and consistent; trying to never make my kid feel they aren’t good enough; and not fighting in front of them. Oh, and not doing anything to instill fear – we want to be their safe place to fall.

    9.      Dinner was not a picture of health but rather a reflection on the kind day (week) I had: Pizza, red wine and a chocolate chip cookie. Whoops, again.

    10.   No big plans but my Yin Yoga has an added hour of meditation this Sunday and I’m looking forward to that. J’s new coffeeshop passed health inspection today, and she said she might need me to help/work a bit for her (though I’m secretly hoping not to have to. Bad wife.) Oh, and dinner with friends tomorrow night!

    BONUS PIP:

This is the first tattoo of J’s I saw, the night we first made out and I, ahem, got her shirt off. I was *so relieved* to see she had a tattoo. I don’t know why, but it made her feel kind of more ‘right’ for me. She has a good bit more now, most honor dead cats (yep, uber lesbo) – this one is a Bodhi tree for her cat Bodhi who got hit by a car when he was two.
