Carrier for chunky butt baby

Carrying my LO is seriously starting to give me back spasms.. I stopped using the Moby and Infantino. And he hates the Ergo.
He is 6 months old almost 27 inches and 22 lbs. I heard the Boba (?) is specially designed to carry heavier loads and put the brunt of the weight on the hips so I may try that. Any other recommendations though

trying to post a pic, i have never been able to upload before...but that doesn't stop me from trying LOL

  • I was just having a similar problem and my son has almost the exact same stats as yours. I was looking at the boba too but I wanted to find one with a wider body to last longer. I was recommended the tula or the kinderpack. I got the kinderpack in the standard size and I love it!! I was having serious back issues before carrying him and now I'm not! Good luck picking :)
  • Perfect, I will look into that.
    Thanks!
  • Post which one you end up getting!
  • No ideas for you, but omg he's so cute!!! Love those thighs. :)
  • Is he on your back or front in the ergo? I loved Beco Butterfly with my kids, DS2 has always been big for his age, but most SSC last until 40 lbs.

    DS2 - Oct 2010 (my VBAC baby!)

  • I always wear him front facing in. I will check out the Beco too.
  • Ah, try him on your back, he's old enough. He might like the Ergo more that way. They start hurting front wearing around 20/25 lbs, IME.

  • My guy is 15mo and 27lbs. We always back carry in a maitei. It is killing me, and I can't do it anymore. I'm pretty small - 5'1", 120ish. My 6'3" husband has no problem with this carrier. Do you think a Kinder pack or Tula would help? I don't know if he's just getting too big for my small frame to carry.

For the 27 lb 15 month old... With the sizes of the 3 of you, I would get a Tula. How tall is your son? You might actually want a Toddler Tula. He might needto sit on a rolled up towel until his torso is longer or it might be a perfect fit. At his size though, you definitely need a toddler carrier. The Toddler Tula is actually great for both the petite and tall plus size... And they have a nice return policy if you don't like it.

  • He's 31 inches - I believe right at 50th percentile for height. Thanks for the info!
  • I made my own mai tai.  You can find some online, or a toddler Tula or Kinderpack would probably be a good fit for you too.  I'd look into a mai tai because you can adjust the straps easily and add more support under the bum.  You should also look into learning a back carry vs front carry.  If you don't have him up high enough, that will stress your back more too.  Here's mine I made, ignore my frown face and unkept hair. :)  You can see it's wide enough to accommodate a toddler as they get bigger. You aren't supposed to use Moby over 15 lbs and Ergos don't accommodate a toddler or bigger kid very well.

  • Here's a pic I was looking for!  It's a comparison of some of the carriers and their sizes with a bigger kid in them.

  • You should look on fb and see if you have a local babywearing group.  Ours has a lending library so you can try before you buy. :)
