Penile Adhesion

For those who had their son circumcised... My friend had just stopped over to visit and meet the baby and told me she had experienced this with her son. Her son was circumcised and apparently the head of the penis had started to fuse with shaft, they didn't catch it with her son until he was 9 months. They had to literally separate her sons head from shaft. She said it was very painful for her LO and she had no idea what/how it had happened.

Apparently while cleaning your child's area make sure to separate the head from the shaft, cleaning all around the base of the head and to also put Vaseline around the base of the head to prevent fusion.

While changing my son today I realized this was beginning to happen. We were not aware that this was even possible. Don't get me wrong I clean that area but didn't realize I had to "stretch" it out like that too. Just thought I would share this info with my fellow bumpies.

Re: Penile Adhesion

  • That happened with DS1 also! I had no idea we had to do that. The pedi ripped it apart at one of his appts!

  • I'm glad you mentioned this. I have 2 sons who are circumcised and I am amazed that drs and nurses dont go over this detail with circ care. My mother, who had 3 sons herself, was the one who told me about being sure to pull back the excess skin all the way at each diaper change, as the head of the penis is extra "sticky" and prone to adhesions while healing. I had an adhesion beginning with DS1 but thankfully caught it before it was permanent. I have a friend who wasn't so lucky unfortunately and ended up having to have her sons circ redone when he was 2 and could undergo anesthesia. It's easy to miss as a FTM

  • I'm glad our doctor mentioned this to me, too. He said he could end up with a "crooked erection" when he gets older. He probably won't want that to happen... Good idea mentioning this to others!

  • It is important to separate that skin with each diaper change. With 2 boys I make sure I do this. My toddler is potty trained but I still do it when giving him a bath. I know in the hospital they don't really mention it but they def should!
  • Wow thanks I had no idea

  • Ummm I had no idea! Ill have to do a penile check next diaper change. Thanks!
  • Yea the ob who did LO's was very adamant about not forgetting to do it. I didn't realize how far down you have to pull it too. Guess they do looser cuts now adays because as they grow if they don't the skin becomes too tight and will cause painful erections.

My son is a week out since he had it done. Is it normal for the skin to still be a little pink/red where the cut was made? Called the ob who did it but they're already out if the office for the weekend

  • How soon should we do this following the circumcision? My son had it done on Monday, and no one mentioned this. Should I wait until it is healed?

  • We waited until our LO's was healed. Dr told us about it at our 2 week check up and said to do it about once a week.

  • Yes wait until its healed. Normal for skin to be red for a couple weeks I would say. My two sons were.
  • Having a mini freak out that I was never aware of this and he is 6 weeks old, I'll have to check him asap when he wakes up.
  • I have a girl but the title of thread made me curious. What high maintenance penises are!!! Good luck ladies!
