Eye discharge

Yesterday afternoon LO had a little bit of white stringy eye discharge. All day she was crabby and had a runny nose and watery eyes which I believe was due to teething. She has 3 or 4 coming in and this is what she looked like when her bottom two came in.

Last night she woke up at 10 and her eyes were very crusty with slightly yellowish discharge and she had a hard time opening them. After consulting dr google I figured it was an infection maybe pinkeye.

She woke at 3 and her eyes were much better. I just wiped them with a damp cloth again. She woke up at 7 and they are glassy but no discharge and no redness.

So I'm guessing pink eye doesn't get better on its own. I'm wondering if this is connected to teething or clogged ducts.

Anyone with thoughts or experience with this?

Re: Eye discharge

  • Dd had pinkeye a few months ago. They weren't quite pink at first, just the crustiness and stuff. I'd never had pinkeye so I didn't know what was going on. She also had a fever prior to her eyes getting swollen and red. We all got the pinkeye, it was horrible.

  • Sounds like allergies to me.  I would call the nurse at your pediatrician's office and talk to them.  DS1 was like that when he was 5 months old and I was convinced he had pinkeye.  The nurse told me it was allergies and to give him Claritan or Zyrtec.  It cleared up in a few days.  This has been one of the worst allergy seasons in years and all three of my kids are on prescription allergy meds right now due to it.

  • DS had something similar few months back. He had yellowish sticky discharge in his eyes. I thought it was pink eye too. Took him to doc he said it was a bacterial infection and prescribed antibiotic ointment. He got better almost instantly after we started the ointment. So def let the doc take a look.

  • Thanks for the advice ladies! I called telehealth to talk to a nurse. Because it seems to have cleared up she said its probably viral from her rubbing her runny nose, then rubbing her eyes. This makes sense. From what ive heard pink eye really takes off once it gets started.

  • My kids have had that happen if they are fighting a cold or something like that.  DS2 always gets red eyes with drainage whenever his nose is stuffed up.

My rule is if the redness and drainage doesn't go away by the time the nose drainage goes away, it's probably an eye infection and I need to see the doc (that's never ended up happening).  Otherwise, as long as the eye doesn't seem to be bothering them, I just let it go.  A steeped chamomile tea bag on the eye can help soothe it and take the redness away.  It's hard to get it on a wiggly baby, but it works for the big kids.  If you can't hold down the baby or put it there while they are sleeping, a shot of BM to the eye always help.
