Babies: 9 - 12 Months

What is your baby's wake time?

My boys just turned 9 months and still seem to get fussy after about 2 hours of being awake.  They go down for their first nap about 2.5 hours after they wake and sleep for 1-1.5 hours.  For their 2nd nap, they are fussy again at about the 2 hour mark and I end up putting them down at about 2.5 hours after they wake again. Again they will sleep for about 1 to 1.5 hours. But then this is what is getting me.  They stay awake for about 4-5 hours in the late afternoon/early evening. But they are still pretty fussy at apprx. 2 hours after they wake.  I try to get them to take a short nap around 4:30 or 5 but they won't sleep.  They go to bet at around 7pm and I am pretty sure they would be out by 6:30 but DH does not get home from work until then so I keep them up.
Everything I read states that they should be able to stay awake for 2.5-3 hours around this age.  So I guess they are on target, it just seems that the evening is so difficult but they won't take a 3rd nap.  OK - that is my scenario.  What does your 9 month old do?  Any suggestions on what to do to keep them up a little longer between naps or is it just something they will eventually do?

Re: What is your baby's wake time?

  • DD fights the late afternoon nap 90% of the time.  If she's calm enough to nurse to sleep, that's the only way she'll nap.  I think it's normal to have a longer wake time in the afternoon though.

At daycare, she naps once, maybe twice.  And the naps are anywhere from 20 minutes to 1.5 hours.  She's too much of a busy body and can't bear to miss anything anyone else is doing.  At home on the weekends, she gets up around 7am, and naps around 9ish, 12ish, and sometimes 3:30 or 4ish (although this is the nap she skips most often).  I think they'll naturally start extending their wake times soon!

  • N is 9 1/2 months.  We dropped the 3rd nap around 6 1/2 months because it was becoming such a hassle on whether or not he would sleep.  Then, I looked at the 2-3-4 schedule and that has been working great for us.

He is usually up 2 - 2 1/2 hours before his first nap.  He sleeps about 1 hr 15 mins.  Then, he goes back down approx. 3 hours from when he woke up.  Sleeps about 1 hr 30 mins.  Then, it's just about 3 1/2 - 4 hrs till bedtime.  It works really well assuming he wakes between 3-3:30 p.m. from his second nap.  I nurse around 6:30 and we put him down by 7ish.

Sometimes he is still a little fussy starting around 5:30 - sometimes I resort to putting him in his bouncer/jumper and turning on Baby Einstein.

  • DS dropped his 3rd nap when he was 8 months.  Between 8-9 months, we were doing the 3-3-3 schedule; but now at 10 months, we are doing more of a 2-3-4 schedule, which works better for him.

our typical day is like this:
    6:45-7a wake up
9:30a first nap (naps 1.25-1.5 hrs)
2:30pm second nap (naps 1.5 hrs)
8pm bedtime routine; asleep by 8:15-8:20pm

I found that initially, I had to work on keeping them up (esp between 1st & 2nd nap).  But once DS adjusted to this schedule, he is able to stay up.

For our late afternoon/evening time, he usually wakes up around 4-4:15pm.  We either go out for a walk or we play in the house.  He may get a little fussy around 6pm, but that's mostly because I need to cook and he's kept out of the kitchen.  DH gets home at 6:30pm and we eat dinner together.  DS definitely gets a second wind when DH comes home.  AFter dinner DH does storytime with DS, and then they play for a little bit.  I nurse him around 7:40pm and then goes up to his room for bedtime routine at 8pm.

  • Mine just dropped their 3rd nap (b/t 5-6pm) about a month ago. They take crappy naps at DC, too - I'm lucky if they get 2 hours total there whereas at home on the weekends they get b/t 3 and 4 hours of napping in. They start waking around 6/6:30am but I don't get them out of their cribs until 7am unless someone is screaming.

Mine are also very fussy after they've been awake longer than 2 - 2.5 hours :/

Ugh 2 hours at daycare is amazing! DD is lucky to get more than one nap, and 90% of the time her nap is less than 1 hour. But she'll do 2 or 3 naps at home, and sometimes sleeps 3 hours at once! Silly babies...
  • My issue is my son wakes too early in the morning. I guess it is our fault because my husband and I have to get up for work at 5am. Even though he is sleeping in his room when our alarms go off he's up. Now it is habit and he wakes up at 5am even on the weekend.

In order to get him to sleep 11-12 hours a night we have to put him to bed by 6pm which stinks. We were doing 2-3-4 and it worked well for us. However his bed time was like 5pm with that schedule so it was more like (2 1/2) - (3 1/2 - 4) - (4-5) in order to get it to 6pm.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get a baby to sleep in later?

I put him to bed later sometimes if I give him a 3rd nap, but he still wakes up at 5am regardless of when he went to bed. I want him to get enough sleep because sleep is so important, but his 6pm bedtime means I only get to see him 2 hours a day. It's depressing. :(

  • DS wakes me up at 7. (I'm sure he wakes up closer to 6 and plays quietly in his crib) He then eats breakfast maybe some play then goes down for a nap around 9. Typically he'll sleep from 9-10:30/11. Then he's up until 1:30/2 (or later if he's fighting it) before going down for a nap again. He typically sleeps between an hour and two hours. Then he's up until 8 when he goes to bed.

  • My DD wakes up every day around 6am because she poops :(  I change her, then bring her in bed with me until the other 2 wake up around 7 (we rarely get back to sleep).  She goes down for her first nap around 8:30-9 (depends on what is going on with the other 2 - but after pre-school drop off, she comes home for a nap).  Wakes up 10:30-11, then back down for another nap around 1:30-3.  Bed around 6:30-7.  There are days, however, when her napping occurs in the car on the go (for example - we went apple picking this weekend and she slept on the way there, and then on the way home - 9am and 12:30pm).  Those days she still takes 2 naps, but they are usually only 45min to an hour.
