telling employer about freelance work?

For those of you who do freelance work in addition to your regular employment, any advice for disclosing that information to your boss?

I am a grant writer at a nonprofit, and I'm hoping to do some freelance writing on the side. In order to avoid a conflict of interest I won't be doing any grant writing; I'm pursuing magazine writing for some regional publications and becoming a regular contributor to some blogs. My website also advertises editing and copywriting services.

Our personnel handbook says that we are to disclose any outside employment, so I'm planning to do so. I'm feeling a little nervous about it, although I don't know why. Any advice on handling this situation?

  • I would think there is a form like pp's said- I'd just ask HR for the protocol & submit it. Sounds like it is not a conflict & obviously you'd be clear it is not during work time so I'm sure it is no big deal. Chances are your boss maybe did it at some point too...

  • At my company, an email to your manager and HR would suffice. There wouldn't be any problem unless it interfered with your job or was a conflict of interest somehow. I'd just go talk to your boss in person, and follow up with an email.
