Music/sound while sleeping

Hey gals,

Are there any of you still using any kind of sound or music at night? We've been using calming sleepy-time music pretty much since DS was born, but I'm wondering when I should stop it. I don't think he'd have a problem with it since he naps at daycare with no music even though we used to play it at naptime at home. The thing is, I like the music - it's calming :P and we have a single-story ranch, so playing it blocks out some of the noise from DH and I (the TV, etc). I don't know - what do you ladies think?

Re: Music/sound while sleeping

  • We also have a smaller home so I still use a white noise machine to block out noises like dishes being put away, TV, big sis playing, etc. so for naps it is still a must. We could probably cut it out during the night time after everyone is in bed but I'm so afraid to alter the sleep routine bc he already sleeps like crap and what if somehow the change makes it worse? I'm paranoid about it haha.

  • I use a white noise machine/projector and have for quite a while now. It has six different sounds, but we just use the white noise setting. I could use a fan and it would probably serve just as well. I agree, we have a single story house and DS' room is right off the living room, so I use it as a noise blocker. I also use the projector because lately, we've been having MOTN milestone wake ups and that seems to keep his attention and distract him from practicing his skills so he'll go back to sleep quicker. If you like it and he does, keep it!

  • I used a lullaby CD with DS1.  By the end of the first year I had the whole thing memorized and playing it now still makes ME sleepy.  We just sort of phased it out one day and he really didn't notice anymore.

I used white noise with DD1 and she still likes it at age 2.  She could probably sleep without it, but I like that it drowns out the noise from her brother's room next door.  I'm considering using it with DD2 soon too so they can both enjoy it when I move them into a room together.  For now DD2 falls asleep to a loud fan in my room.

I would stop it whenever you want.  It's not hurting anything if she still likes it.

  • We still use a sound machine for both boys and DS1 is almost 3.  Our house is small and one floor, so we really need it to preserve a relaxing sleeping space without a lot of background noise

  • We have a sound machine for DD and use the projection and ocean sound at bed time & nap time. For DS we use an iPod sound dock with an album we downloaded. It has 6 different white noise tracks that playfor 10 minutes each. We just put it on repeat. It works really well to block out all the noise we make after the kids go to bed like washing dishes, dog barking, etc.

  • I thought about stopping it too when DD went to daycare, but I read that it is calming and is fine to continue with them.  I am in a townhome.  While you can't hear the neighbors, we do adjoin back yards, so it does cut out that noise if anyone is outside.  Also cuts out noise downstairs, so I decided to keep using it through the night.

For her naps, I just turn it down a little since she doesn't have one at daycare.  I think you should still use it.

  • Both my kids have sound machines. We live in a single story house. We also live by a gas station, that gets 24 hour semis, so it can get loud. I don't have to stop any time soon. There is just too much noise, and add the pets and the occasional train, the kids would wake up all the time.
