Baby Names

Help! Baby name dilemma.

Hello!
My grammie past away last year and it is important for me to choose a name for my baby girl that is somehow connected with her. I spent 6 years typing her memiors and one of her childhood friends was named Lael (pronounced Lay-elle). I adore the name, and it's uniqueness but I'm struggling with spelling and don't want my daughter to have to constantly correct people.
My Grammie's grandma's name was Hattie, and I love that name as well but I'm afraid it is getting overly popular. Your thoughts?

Re: Help! Baby name dilemma.

  • Hattie isn't what I'd call popular. Old-fashioned/vintage names are in vogue now, but Hattie is far from common. What was your grandma's name? It seems like the best way to honor her would be to use her name.

  • I WISH I could, but my brother was ahead of me in having children and he named their daughter, Nyla, after her.
  • I would not classify Hattie as popular.

It's definitely part of the vintage name trend, and it's also the name that Tori Spelling named her younger daughter, so those might be the reasons it feels popular.

    It's cute.

I am not crazy about Lael-- I see tons of pronunciation issues.  Similar names IMO are Layla, Leila, Lyla, Elle.

  • Can you use Harriet and call her Hattie?

Is there a maiden name you can use? A middle name? A name of where she lived?

Could you use her initial with a different name? Use Nyla as a MN?

IMO you have a lot of options

::And those are rhetorical questions, you don't need to answer::

  • Hattie is by no means popular. What was your grandmother's middle name? Last name? I am honoring my Grandfather by giving my daughter his last name as her middle name.
  • Hi! I've been considering Layla as a nickname for Lael. Other spellings I've considered are Layelle & Laielle.

I'm confused.  You mentioned wanting to use Hattie but then commented above about Nyla.  How are the two related?

    Add me as confused.

  • I think Nyla was her grandma's name, but Hattie was her grandma's grandma's name.

  • I love Hattie, and also is wondering what your Grandma's middle name was
  • Thanks for all the responses ladies, yes, my Grammie's name was Nyla (taken) her middle name was claire which has never been a favorite of mine, and my great grandmas name was Hattie.
  • No one likes Lael I take it :)?

I happen to love Lael and grew up with Lael being a friend of my mother. I think it is one of those names that isn't intuitive to pronounce but once you hear it correctly, it sticks and people will be fine saying it.

Honestly, I hear my husband working on pronunciation of some very unusual names from his preschoolers and think Lael or Hattie would be refreshing.
  • I like Hattie better. It's old fashioned and even though I'm hearing it more I wouldn't say it's anywhere near "popular"! It's short for Harriet usually.

I actually kind of like the way it sounds but struggle with the spelling, and I don't like the idea of making up another spelling to sound the same.  Also, BTN lists Lael as a male name (Hebrew meaning "of God"), if that matters to you.

Please don't take this the wrong way - but if you're kind of stretching it anyway to use your grandma's friend's name to honor your grandma - I think going with a more traditionally spelled name that has similiar sounds as Lael - such as Layla (or any of its variants) - would be a perfectly fine alternative, assuming you like that as a FN.  Or, I like the idea of Lyla which is one letter off of Nyla (if you don't mind rhyming cousin names!).

    And, Hattie is nice too!

  • Just to toss it out there, I'm kind of liking Hattie Claire.

    Rethink Claire. It's lovely!

  • If we went with Hattie, I would choose the middle name Jo (which is my mom's mn). I am not sure why I am so stuck on family names...
Naming a baby is HARD! :)
  • I don't care for Hattie that much. I like Lael for a girl (Laela/Layla?). I love Claire (it's on my short list). I also love the suggestion "Lyla" above. Layla Claire, Lyla Claire maybe?
  • I like both Hattie and Lael. If you're considering other spellings so that it is mispronounced less, how about Layele or Leyele? The two L's aren't necessary.

  • I agree that Lael is a stretch to honor your grandma. I also would assume it was a boy. Hattie lovely and underused.

  • What about the spelling laelle? I think it's a beautiful sounding name. Laelle Hattie or Hattie laelle are great names!
Or layelle. Go with whatever sticks in your head more!
  • Hattie Lael sounds like a great name to me! You could also spell it Layelle (less pronunciation issues there). Some PP suggested just using Layla instead but Layla isn't nearly as pretty, or speaical for that matter as using Lael that has meaning to you.
  • If we went with Hattie, I would choose the middle name Jo (which is my mom's mn). I am not sure why I am so stuck on family names...

My name is Hattie Jo and I love it. I have only met one other Hattie and she was in her 80's.
  • You have a great name! It's so nice to hear positive feedback from someone who has lived with the name. Thank you!
