Re: EBF Moms - It gets easier!

  • Congrats!! I'm at 3 weeks currently. Looking back, what would you say is easier or better now about it compared to a few weeks ago?

  • When I was BFing my oldest, it was comfort level. We had figured each other out, he was gaining weight like gangbusters, and he was getting more efficient. He stopped eating in the MOTN somewhere between 3-4 months also (feed at 11 and then again at 6). He had settled himself into a schedule on his own, too. I got more confident NIPing.

  • And @cinderin, congrats on making it to 6weeks!!

  • Congrats on makin it 6w!! EBF here also and we hit the 6w mark Monday. I'm happy to be feeling a break from all the engorgement and oversupply issues. Still having letdown problems but I'm excited we made it this far. And it has gotten so much easier the past 2-3 weeks.
    Keep it up, mamas!

  • Yay!!! I'm at 9 weeks, although LO was in the NICU for 2.5...so I'm truly around that 6 week mark too! I actually enjoy EBFing...and feel bad that DH has to wait for a pumped bottle to warm up on his overnight feeding. I just really hope more sleep will kick in soon...
  • Love this- its a good reminder! LO is 3 weeks today and I've been discouraged by our last two sessions of BF- he keeps pulling away. :( I EP'd with LO#1, so I'm excited that BF is actually working.

  • I'm a month in and aside from the days when DS wants to cluster feed (hello sore nipples) I'm loving the experience.

  • Well that's reassuring. We are at 3 weeks now, well coming up on 4, and while BF has been going great this past week was definitely the hardest. I am glad to know it gets easier soon :)

  • It definitely gets easier! I always wanted to EBF but was truly over it around the month mark. It is so worth the effort to push yourself past it. :)
  • We're at 8 weeks already. I love the connection I have with my LO while he's feeding. I definitely see how I could make it to 6 full months - which is my goal. The only drawback is that my boobs are just so dang big that it hurts to run, and I miss running. My solution is to pump and then run immediately afterwards. I probably stlll have some oversupply issues - but I've been working on making a freezer stash. Is that bad?

  • Wow, 6 weeks already. Actually able to satisfy LO AND start a pumped stash.

  • Thank you for this!!! I'm 6 weeks today, feels great!!
  • It'll be 6 weeks on monday, it's already starting to get easier.

  • 6 weeks on Sunday. It is getting easier, but the cluster feeding in the early evening makes me feel like such a couch potato!
"The cleaning, the scrubbing will wait til tomorrow,
For children grow up, as I've learned to my sorrow.
So, quiet down cobwebs. Dust go to sleep.
I'm rocking my baby and babies don't keep."
  • I showered and forgot to put pads in my bra for leaking.. just went to the mirror and the whole front of my shirt is like, soaked. Sigh.

EBF is definitely annoying/hard, but I'm glad it gets better. I've noticed it's even gotten better after 3 weeks.

  • I'm definitely happy to be past the issues of sore nipples and engorgement. For the most part I do love BFing because it's so convenient and I feel a strong level of closeness to LO, but these growth spurts are a pain in the butt for sure! I feel like DD's own personal dairy cow some days haha My goal is to EBF for 5 months though (that's when I'll start school and clinicals full time so I won't be able to provide enough for her with my limited pumping schedule). I almost already have a month and a half under my belt so I know I can do it!
  • For those of you at 6 weeks, how has it gotten easier? Is it mainly because you are used to it and in more of a routine by now?

Can't speak for everyone but for me the "easier" bits are:
1.) My nipples are tougher so they don't hurt as much
2.) LO is a more efficient nurses so it doesn't take as long
3.) Fewer feedings in 24 hour period

I'm still struggling, but it is much better. Hoping to make it to the 3 month promise land - technically almost halfway there. That makes me feel a little better. :)

  • We hit 6 weeks yesterday. It's definitely easier then when we started but its still not easy. Mostly because he is tongue tied.

  • I am at 7 weeks now. Nursing has always been quick with my LO, so I started enjoying it around the 4 week mark. I also like that she is most content with me, even if I'm pretty sure she only feels that way because I'm also food.

Hang in there mommies! I already feel that formula would be a pain for our family.

  • I made it to 4 weeks so far and its getting easier. My nips are not so sore, LO latches easier and she doesn't need as much time to eat. GL and keep up the good work ladies.

This exactly for me too! I feel like I was feeding around the clock at the beginning. My nipples also used to be SO sore, I cried a couple times and would have to use my labour breathing techniques not to scream for the first 2 minutes of feeding. My LO still doesn't have a great latch, and we're still using the shield, but I rarely am in pain and if I am, it's not as severe as it used to be, and it doesn't last.

Have you had it clipped? My DS had tongue tie also and they clipped it on his second day of life.

  • I'm at 7 weeks of EBF now, and it's just second nature now- it's so easy! I had a much easier time getting the hang of BFing with this LO than I did with DS though, so I do know how challenging it CAN be.

Just hang in there! You won't regret it! AND, when it comes time to stop, you'll probably be semi-sad!
  • We're at 4 weeks too. Two weeks until I'm back at work & a little anxious about that. I've pumped once a day the past few days and have a small stash. Reflux has reared it's ugly head this week & it's been tough!

Mine is too, but it is not all the way to the end. The ped and ENT person looked at it and said the tie was very thick and would be a much more intensive procedure than a normal tongue tie.

She is gaining weight well so it was a risk reward assessment on whether or not to do it. I opted not to based on the advise of both professionals. I really respect my LOs ped because he is extremely non-invasive and conservative. He sat me down and really weighed the pros and cons and made sure I knew I was making the call.

Every once in awhile the tongue tie is frustrating because she can't hold a binky in her mouth or struggles with staying on during longer nursing sessions due to muscle fatigue, but hers is not terribly severe. (As a matter of fact she and I actually have almost identical tongue ties.)

They are supposed to be genetic :-) so if we decide to have another lo, I will have it in my birth plan to have lo checked for tongue tie immediately. :-)
