OT: Garage Sale Etiquette

My SIL and I are having a garage sale next weekend.

Over the last two years she has passed down to us a lot of baby clothes. They have a two year old girl and we have a one year old boy so most of the clothes they have passed have gone into totes in the garage for a future child.

Recently, they decided they may have another child. I asked if they wanted all of the clothes back and they said no, they did not want to store clothes for a "maybe" future child that may not even be a girl. I am running out of room in my garage and can not keep all of these clothes so I started to go through them and am saving some but want to get rid of most. I asked her again this week if she wants clothes back and she said they definitely do not have room to store them.

Is it rude of me to put them in the garage sale we are doing together? Should she get the money I make off of them because they were originally hers? Part of me feels like they are now my clothes and I can do whatever I want to with them but part of me feels like making a profit off her clothes she can't store is a little...I dunno...It just doesn't sit right.

  • I tell her specifically that you don't have room for them and if she doesn't take them, you'll be putting them into the yard sale.  It sounds like maybe she's just thinking you'll keep storing them.  I would also offer to split the profits, as they did start out as hers, but you've definitely been keeping them nice.

    This.
  • I would say since you have asked twice if they want them back and they said no both times they are now yours to do what you want with them.

This, just be up front and offer to split.
