I'm currently working on a lawsuit involving a small child. There are 3 other attorneys on the case, and 3/4 of us have kids. Yesterday we did a deposition of a pediatrician (which is like a question answer session) going over the child's records.
Attorney: You have a bunch of notations during this 6-8 week visit involving the child's sleep/wake times. Is there a reason for that?
Dr: Well, the child was waking 3 times during the night.
Attorney: Isn't that fairly typical for a 6 1/2 week old?
Dr: No, that's more than we would expect a 6 1/2 week old to wake at night.
All 3 of us that have kids looked around the table and raised our eyebrows. Then after, while we were walking to our cars, we talked about what a ridiculous statement that was. And how often our kids woke up at night. I think we terrified the woman who doesn't have kids yet.
Re: Being part of the "parents club"
She also said there's an issue if a child isn't rolling by 7 months (mine never rolled) and that children can't be expected to recognize letters until 5 (mine can do it at 23 months, and his little buddy at daycare came up and told me my bag had a "W" on it this morning)
I do tend to think that there's a separation between what the books say, and what people actually experience, so if she doesn't have kids, she might not recognize that babies rarely read textbooks.
