MoM's opinions on dental work while pregnant.

I am going to ask my MFM center about this but my first appointment is not for another month. Frankly my dr's opinion is something I'm taking lightly these days. You ladies have taught me more than my OB has!

I went to the dentist today and he told me I need two fillings replaced. He said he's done this work in pregnant women before and it's no big deal. He said he could use special local anesthesia that does not raise the heart rate.

The work is not detrimental and in my opinion could definitely wait until my twins are born. The fillings do not bother me at all.

Should I just put this off? Or am I a FTM who is worrying too much?

Re: MoM's opinions on dental work while pregnant.

  • If the fillings can wait for replacement until after your pregnancy, I'd just wait.  If they are in danger of falling out sooner, you probably need to get it done.  If this is the first time it's been mentioned, then you can probably wait.  At least that's what I do :)  But, I would check with your OB (or MFM) first.  Most dentists I know won't touch you unless they have the ok of your OB and there is a real need to do it.  I had no dental work done while pregnant, just my regular cleaning.  They wouldn't do x-rays either.

  • Just talked to the nurse in my OB's office. She said its no big deal and it's really up to me. She said if its not an issue right now then put it off but if they start to bother me then get it over with. I dunno what to do.
  • If they don't bother you I agree with pp just wait it out. Better safe than sorry :) unless your in discomfort from it then there is no rush a few months wont hurt for a couple of fillings.
