brief story about me being stupid

I was reminded of this in the gif party thread (which is awesome!!) when someone mentioned talking about pregnancy at the grocery store.

The woman checking me out asked me a question: "what do you do?"
I was proudly all, "I'm a professor at X college," because I love my job so much.
She smiled politely.

Then I realized I'm a complete moron. That was definitely NOT what the lady asked. I mean, why would someone ask that out of the blue?
"Oh...wait, you said 'when are you due,' right? In 10 days."
I can be so dense. And this is clearly an indication of how I've been focusing on my job a bit much (even though I'm on leave this whole semester due to the pregnancy) and on the baby too little (we still have a lot of stuff to set up / take care of...neither DH nor I are nesters.)

Incidentally, the bagger goes to my college so we were able to have a mini-conversation about that, at least, so all was not lost.

Anyone else have any recent embarrassing stories to tell?

  • That's funny.  I agree with Loppy...you just didn't hear correctly.  I am sure you aren't waiting for people to ask you pregnancy questions so you can jump at answering them :)

The only half way embarrassing thing that has happened to me recently was this past weekend when I was late for a wedding (I am late for everything) and I was rushing to my seat and I almost fell on my face.  I would usually be embarrassed, but I was still irritated with the slow drivers and running late I didn't care.

  • Oh my gosh if you only knew how many times this happens to me. I am completely deaf in one ear, so I almost always do not hear the right things. Example, the first time I got my drivers license at the DMV. The lady asked of I was hearing impaired. I genuinely did not hear her and said "what?" She repeated, I laughed and told her yes.

More recently, my husband works with raising turkeys for a company, so he has a large scale to weigh the turkeys, about 20, 50 lb. turkeys at the same time, so it's a big scale. We had the radio on, we walk up to the scale, and I thought I heard him say "honey it's your pregnancy scale" I thought he was calling me fat! I started crying, and he was confused. He really said "honey it's your pregnancy song" which is Pink's song True Love.

@kat81again2 this exact thing happened to me earlier this week with my new neighbor which I had already told her what I do but I was like hmm maybe she's making small talk and wondering why I'm home all the time right now so I awkwardly launched into telling her how I was a long term sub for a local school district the last 2 years but with being pregnant I didn't get anything and went to day to day but haven't been needed.

While I'm rattling on she looks at me with this, "huh" look then goes, "no when are you due."

Haha that's funny. Not that embarrassing, at least you corrected yourself! The other day at my midwife's office, a new nurse was taking me back to the exam room and I sort of stepped on the back of her shoe as she was saying, "My name's Julie," and instead of saying "Sorry" for stepping on her shoe OR "Nice to meet you," both of which would have been appropriate, I said, "Thank you." For no reason at all. And it was embarrassing. And then I waited a moment to long to correct myself or say something else, so it just hung there. Durrrrrr
