Mixed emotions: er trip

So yesterday I worked 5 to 9 and when I came home my SO says don't freak out but this is serious, so naturally I thought he was joking until he told me he thought our LO might have swallowed a metal thumb tack! Don't freak out my arse, are you kidding me?!? A thumb tack came out of the wall and he couldn't find it and LO was playing in the same area where it fell. So to be on the safe we took him in and they had to do an x ray, thankfully everything turned out okay!
I'm kind of frustrated about the whole thing though, how do you not know if he swallowed a thumb tack or what time it might have happen. And why on earth did you wait til I got home when it possibly happened around 630! I want to be mad at him so bad but he's already beating himself up over this (which he should be in my opinion) and feels like a horrible dad (which he's not). I'm pissed he had to have an x ray to rule this out when it was all so avoidable in the first place; don't let LO out of your sight for that long of a time where you have no clue whats going on! It was definitely an eye opener for him; that he needed but I just wish it didn't have to come at the expense of our LO's health. Seeing that LO is thankfully happy and healthy and didn't ingest a tack I'm trying not to be mad at him and be a little more supportive about everything because he is genuinely a good dad and sometimes things happen that we wish didn't. Hopefully he learns from this and realizes LO needs to be looked after 24/7!

Re: Mixed emotions: er trip

  • I'm glad that your LO is okay - I'm sure that was scary.

It sounds like you're being a little harsh to your SO though.  There will be times when all of us take our eyes off of the LOs, and something can happen in just a few seconds.  I had to go to the bathroom the other day and thought DD was playing with her toys... Was gone less than 2 minutes, and came back to find her happily munching on the cat food in the next room.  It's less tragic than a tack, but you see my point -- 24/7 isn't a realistic expectation for anyone.

  • What a bummer of a day!! I totally would have freaked at the thought of one of my LOs swallowing a metal thumbtack.....though, I can't help but wonder, don't you think he would have cried or coughed or there have been some clue that he swallowed it....I can't imagine it going down easily....but maybe it was really small, idk....

I agree w/ @SingleMom31 about how fast these things can happen. Just today I was playing with LOs on the floor, and I notice that L got kinda quiet and was chomping on something. I look to see what it is and it's my earring! I completely missed him getting it out of my ear....so crazy how fast -- and dangerous -- these LOs are!

  • I completely agree with all of you, thank you for your responses. I guess what bothered me the most was the lack of details he was able to give about the whole situation. Because he says he didn't cry or fuss at all so why would you think he swallowed it? I don't know, it's a new day, I got more than 4 hours of sleep and the nervousness of it all has past. We still can't find that stupid tack though!
  • I can imagine how badly that freaked you out...but to be fair, things like that happen with kids our age. I came out of the back room of my Mom's house yesterday and she and DD were sitting in the floor of the living room. I am standing there talking to Mom and notice DD looking like she's chewing...i see her reach up and look like she's putting something in/taking something out of her mouth and start the chewing motion again...I decide to investigate and come to find that she has reached up, pulled the barrette out of her hair, and has it completely in her mouth..and we were standing right there watching her so I have no idea how she managed to ninja that...DH should have taken action sooner if he thought your LO had swallowed it, but maybe he was trying to find the tack or too in shock to think clearly. Glad everything worked out for the best, though.

  • I'm constantly pulling Legos from DDs mouth. She always puts them in her cheeks like a chipmunk, so it's pretty obvious. DS is really good about keeping them out if reach, but those itty bitty little accessory pieces get lost in the carpet, so of course the baby finds them.
