Why was a schedule so important again?

Ok so I remember with C I had a very strict, regimented schedule with her that I rarely strayed from. She would eat and nap at 10am and 2pm, in bed at 7.   Now that we have 2, I find that we just eat, nap, and go to bed whenever the heck we have time.  There's no schedule or crazy stress with it at all and she seems fine.  I wish I had this relaxed attitude the first time around!  Will this bite me in the butt later? :)

Re: Why was a schedule so important again?

  • Hooray for relaxed lifestyle. We kept a bedtime and bedtime routine :) and tried to keep the toddler on his routine but you're right I wasn't nearly as regimented with J as I was with A. But J is also a bit more relaxed than A was too which helped.

  • We were pretty relaxed in the beginning, but once DS2 got to be around 6 months old and solidly on that "2 nap a day" routine we've stuck to it about 75% of the time.

I don't mind staying home in the mornings and having DS2 take his morning nap in his crib. It gives DS1 and a bit of 1-on-1 time.

But now that he's alllmmmost ready to drop the morning nap we will go out in the mornings on the weekends and he'll usually end up cat-napping in the car. Then we go home for afternoon naps for both kids.

Overall DS2 seems much more flexible than DS1 ever was. Not sure if it's just his personality or the fact that he's the second child or a bit of both.

  • If thats what works for your family, then stick with it!

We were pretty much the same way.  G was on a pretty regular routine but not really a schedule.  Then with 2, it was hard to keep the routines in sync so we did what had to be done whenever needed.  Much more relaxed the 2nd time around.

  • we had more of a schedule with #1 as well.  with #2, we just tried to get him to nap whenever we could.  he was NOT more relaxed, he would scream until we got him to sleep...but we just couldnt be on as tight of a schedule with 2 babies.
  • Eh, with 2 kids, I feel like "rules" go out the window. With Kieran (almost 6 months), we're fairly relaxed too. Daycare does a good job of getting him on a schedule, but it's slightly different each day. His first nap depends on when he wakes up in the morning and some days he'll take a 3rd nap and some he won't. So if he doesn't, his bedtime might be earlier.

We were not that regimented, esp at 3 mo, but did try to stick to a pretty solid bedtime, within 30 min. I think as long as you do that and get SOME napping in, you're probably good to go. You can become more regimented with naps later. I don't think we had a real nap schedule until after the third nap was dropped. And we were even pretty relaxed then until we were down to one nap. We were sort of strict about that for a while (within an hour, at least), but by the time DS was 2 we relaxed on the nap as well, so it could happen at different times, and now, not all of the time because DS is already starting to drop it (DH dropped his at 2 and DS's cousin dropped his at 2, so it's not 100% crazy that DS is starting to try to drop his as well. He also dropped the other naps early.)

ETA: in case it's not obvoius this is all about DS1. Who knows how our schedules will change when #2 is added to the mix!

  • As long as a schedule includes "mummy gets her coffee in the morning", then it works for my family, lol.
