Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Rolling Over and Pushing Self up with Arms

When did your baby start rolling over? How about using their arms to push themselves up like a seal? My LO just turned 4 months and is bringing her legs up and rolling to the side, but isn't rolling over. She does tolerate some tummy time when I help to roll her over, but she constantly keeps her arms down at her side and just lifts her head with an arched back ("superman" pose). Should she be using her arms more than that at this point?

Re: Rolling Over and Pushing Self up with Arms

  • Everyone does it at different times. DD loves tummy time which is strange to me. My son hated it and rolled around 3 months then stopped for awhile. I just help him prop his arms under him and would help him push his feet against something. Also once your lo gets on their side put something like a toy where they would have to keep looking that way to finish rolling over.

  • LO first rolled from tummy to back at 2 months for like a week, then stopped. At 3.5 months she rolled back to tummy and hasn't quit. Finally last week she re rolled tummy to back, but i think that's because she started getting on her hands and knees.

She's always used her arms for as long as I can remember. it'll click for your LO-i would imagine it's kind of like crawling. Some kids may realize faster than others you have to move your arms and legs at the same time, and some kids take longer to understand that.

  • My first was never a roller. She rolled tummy to back a few times around 4 months but never was one to "roll around" like other babies do. My second seems to be following a similar pattern. He has rolled tummy to back before, but lately when I put him on his tummy he just supermans or looks around. And on his back he only rolls to his sides.
  • My LO just started rolling over on her own about 4 days ago, and she's 5 months today. She can only roll back to front, not front to back. This has been especially fun since her new thing is rolling over in her crib and proceeding to cry because she doesn't really want to be on her tummy and sometimes gets her feet stuck in the slats when attempting this. Yet she does it over and over again!

  • mine first rolled back to tummy at 3.5 months and then completely lost interest for a few months.    then at 5.5 months all he does is roll back to tummy.   he rolled tummy to back at 3 months too but i haven't seen him do it since.  I'm just enjoying him still having limited mobility so we have some extra time before baby proofing the house.

  • I know this is a few weeks old but I searched it and was glad to read what everyone had to say... I got an email from fit pregnancy today, "your baby at 13 weeks". It said baby should be rolling over, and should recognize the pressing a button on a toy will do something. At 13 weeks, I can barely get him to tolerate tummy time, let alone keep him there long enough to roll over, and he's just starting to effectively reach for something, not press buttons! I know he's scooting around because he travels all over his crib at night, but not rolling over yet.
  • One of my twins started rolling on labor day from back to tummy.  She figured out her arms under her chest a couple days ago.  She doesn't straighten her arms and push herself up, but folding her arms under her chest helps her look around better.  So she's liking being on her belly more than she used to.  Still waiting for twin 2 to roll all the way over.  She's about 3/4's of the way.  She's getting hung up on an arm.

I think she is okay. My LO kept refusing to do anything other than the Superman pose, and literally four days ago, she suddenly did a roll from back to front and propped herself into a seal position. I had started putting her arms under her chest when she was doing tummy time, I don't know if that helped, maybe try that? She had lost interest in rolling for a while too, she was more interested in trying to figure out how to sit up.
