Choosing an OB for twins? Help!

I'm not sure how to do this, these at our first kids and we don't know how all this works. What should I be researching? Is there a specific doctor I need? What do I look for in a hospital? Do I need to contact my insurance and let them know its multiplies and check coverage?

    I didn't contact my insurance provider. But I did look for a good OB in my area. She/He will refer you to a MFM (maternal fetal medicine) Doc who specialize in multiples. They will offer advice on choosing the hospital and all that directly with you. It may be trial and error with OB/GYNs I went threw 3 before I found one I clicked with with my son so i knew who I want with these boys. Make sure they are understanding of you and your pregnancy if ANYTHING seems off find someone else. Just make sure that OB accepts and bills your insurance provider. Congrats on the babies! Its an amazing journey!

    I first found the best NICU in the area. You can look up what level they are online. Then I found an OB who had privileges there. You may not need it but it is so nice to have that just in case. Of course, keep in mind how long it takes to get there and if they take your insurance. As part of my finding an OB, I asked how they felt about me seeing an MFM as well. My OB's practice has a partnership with an MFM's office and they collaborate on my care. Then I started seeing an MFM.

    Just a little bkgd- An OB is your doctor for you and your pregnancy. You may want to ask if they have an after hours line and how responsive they will be. Look up reviews on Yelp or your local boards. An MFM is the babies' doctor. They monitor their health but do not do deliveries.

    I would first find the hospital you would like to deliver at. It should have a high level NICU. I would then look at their maternal fetal medicine department and start making calls asap to see (1) if they deliver and (2) if they take your insurance and (3) they are taking new patients delivering during the month you are due

    If they deliver, you can avoid having 2 doctors managing your care.

    If they don't deliver, ask for an OB recommendation of someone they have a working relationship with.

    Call sooner rather than later, MFMs book up fast.

    D & L are here at 34 weeks 4 days by vaginal and breech delivery on 11/19/2013
    Two healthy boys weighing 4 lbs 15 ozs and 4 lbs 5 ozs.  Only 6 days in the NICU and getting bigger, stronger and cuter every day!
