Not one for discression, I'm leaking

Due on Monday, a few contraction type pains and loads of back pain the last day and all day today I've felt damp downstairs so much so I've resorted to wearing a pad. Any ideas if this is discharge or could it be waters slowly with no other real symptoms of labour? I've had 3 baths in the last 24 hours to help with the back pain but think I would have noticed if I was In labour? Advise please ladies! Xx

Re: Not one for discression, I'm leaking

  • could be that you're in very early labour, which can last a few days for some ladies.  Can't tell you if your dampness is discharge or water (how could we possibly know?) You said you don't have any real symptoms of early labour.  "a few contraction type pains and loads of back pain... all day" are some of the reported symptoms of early labour.

Talk to your OB or midwife or whoever your primary caregiver is.

    Good luck.
  • I've worn pads for discharge the whole pregnancy.  /:)

  • The only way to really know is to get it tested by your doctor or hospital. However, it doesn't sound like your waters breaking. Your discharge increases a ton in the last month of pregnancy. I have felt damp down there for weeks now. I have been wearing a small panty liner for a couple weeks.

  • Your dr, or L&D can check you.. if your water broke you are not really supposed to take a bath considering you could introduce bacteria into your uterus... and if it started yesterday and is your water it is suggested to deliver within 24 hours to avoid infection as well. This is why your Dr or midwife, or whoever you use, would have hopefully told you by now that you're supposed to call if you think your water has broken.  And yes, you would probably know if you were in full blown active labor, but your water can break and still have no contractions, etc, which is why you should probably be calling and asking your dr and not an internet board. 8-|

All of this. Sounds like it could be early labour. Better to be sure and get checked in my opinion.

  • I agree with everyone else and just wanted to say that I have also had WAY more discharge recently, more frequent BH contractions that hurt more than before, and increased back pain. But as a BTDT mom I'm 100% sure I'm not in labor yet. (That being said, if the trend continues I realize I might have some ambiguity later as to whether I'm in labor, but I'm sure now that it's not it.) I think we're just all getting to the end, and these are common symptoms to start to increase. If you're ever in doubt call your OB/midwife and see if they recommend coming in to be swabbed for AF.

    Some facts about waters breaking:
    1) most people get painful, time-able contractions before waters break; they know they are in labor, though it's possible for your first labor sign to be your water breaking (as many can attest to here.)
    2) usually when your water breaks it's a gush, though leaks are of course possible!
    3) usually when your water breaks you'll start getting contractions--probably quite powerful ones--shortly thereafter, though there are exceptions to this as well.

So given all of that, most dampness is not AF. Of course we have high profile cases like Sarah Palin who go completely against the grain on this!

  • For leakage my ob said to lay on your back for a few min with legs in the air and then stand up. If it drips down your leg then it's probably amniotic fluid and not discharge.

If you want to be 100% sure go to l&d and they'll do a swab. Warning - it's slightly painful esp when accompanied by a cervical check. Ouch! I was not prepared and yelled oh sh!t in my doctors office.

Same here.  My first pregnancy I was constantly thinking I leaked.  Nope, just as my OB says "a very wet vagina".

But go in and get checked if you want to check since we don't know, certainly before taking any more baths.
