Yesterday I had my 1 hour glucose test and two hours ago I found out that I failed with a whopping score of 166... due to work scheduling and school, I couldnt immediately go in for the 3 hour today or tomorrow at the nurses request. I go next Tuesday, their next available appointment and am terrified.
I'm 27 weeks pregnant, 5'11" 130 pounds (23 pounds gained since pregnancy) and live an fairly active lifestyle. I'm so upset about the results but deep down knew it'd probably come to me having to do the 3 hour. I'm absolutely terrified mainly because I have to fast starting from 8pm Monday night until the finish of the tests. I dont do bloodwork very well ever, let alone being poked 4 times all on an empty stomach.
For my 1 hour, my Doctor told me to eat normally until 2pm the day of the test (my appointment was at 4pm in the afternoon). The day of my appointment, I had cereal for breakfast (10am) and a snack of string cheese, cottage cheese, and a small apple around 1pm, then water after that yet I still fail. I dont understand and I'm worried about the possibilities of GD, failing my 3 hour, or even worse blacking out during the 3 hour (which I have a history of doing with bloodwork).
Any advice?
Re: Failed 1 Hour Glucose @ 166
I know it's stressful, and I don't mean to sound cruel, but if you have GD, you have it. It's not the end of the world. You can't trick the test, so there's really no advice anyone can give you.

As far as the possibility of having GD, there is no point getting worked up about it right now. There is nothing you can do to change it. If you don't have it, you'll have wasted a bunch of time worrying, and if you do have it they will get you set up with the info you need quickly. It is manageable, and you figure it out for your own sake and the sake of the baby.
Mainly I just want to say that whatever happens, you are going to be fine. The test isn't as awful as it sounds, and even a diagnosis of GD isn't the end of the world.
Don't stress too much about it, a lot of women fail the one hour and pass the 3 hour.
I'm glad you are having a healthy pregnancy, but I'm just stuck on that figure. Sorry to fixate.
I failed my 1 hour about the same as you did (in the 160's) and passed my 3 hour just fine. There's nothing you can do to pass, but the cut offs are way higher, like the 1 hour score needs to be 195 or less and then it stair steps down each hour. Just follow your doc's instructions for test day.
I did skip the sweets and ice cream the night before even though that doesn't matter, it made me feel better.
Im hoping that my Doctors office will do like they did for me when I went to urgent care earlier on in my pregnancy (5weeks along) when they done tons of bloodwork. Seeing that I have a tendency to black out with bloodwork they put an IV in and just drew the blood from there when they needed it instead of consistently poking me every few hours. Thankfully my husband was able to get the time off to be with me, its not the worry of having GD or caring for it, its just the worry of my levels at the one hour in comparison to the whole 3 hour process.
I'm hoping and praying everything goes well and I dont black out - the chance of being diagnosed with GD isnt my worry, its the fact of the matter of the bloodwork. I'll post an update after I get my results
it's going to be fine...I had the 4 pokes it's not pleasant the 2nd ones the worst I asked to lie down and I went to sleep. you must fast but it' not that bad. i'm borderline and going to see a specialist I also saw a nutritionist, biggest thing get off milk in the morning and very low carbs for breakfast this helped me bring my sugar way down just those small changes. i'm eating an avocado and some cheese mainly for the morning and it's so good for you. get the data is all I can say. the drugs my dr is recommending are insulin and glyburide - I don't like the research on the glyburide no way will I take it even the manufacturer say not to take it if you're pregnant yet it was recommended to me dr are not scientists!!! good luck.
2.) If you have GD it has to do with how your placenta helps your body process insulin. Lifestyle, weight & family history have relatively low impact. I've known a 100 lbs vegan that ran 4 miles daily while pg to have GD all three times.
3.) I failed the one-hour every time & passed the three hour. It's common.
