Natural Birth

How to convince DH to go with a homebirth....

A little background.....

I have had two hospital births with epidurals with my first 2 children. Then had 2 late losses (one at nearly 20wks and 1 at 15weeks) both with in the last year. The delivery of my last two losses were VERY difficult emotionally and the idea of going back to the hospital does NOT sound appealing. I have switched providers and as long as I get "down graded" from being high risk I plan on delivering in a birth center at the very least. (The only reason I am titled high risk is my last 2 losses were both due to chromosomal issues).

So that being said................ :)

I would MUCH prefer a home birth. NO going somewhere I am not comfortable, not having to worry about an uncomfortable drive to the birth center, getting to sleep in my own bed, being able to take control (or feel like I have) of my birth experience. These are all things that I really want but DH is uncomfortable about the potential "mess".

Have any of you successfully convinced your DH's to consider a homebirth?

P.S I am also 11 wks along and know it may take this long to convince him :)

  • I'd have him talk with the midwife directly. Don't they do most of the clean up?

  • Yes, and I have explained that to him. Have had a midwife speak with him with prior pregnancies but no luck....

and the thing is I know he would be fine with it while in the moment and it is just the "thought" of doing it at home that weirds him out.

  • Mine was kinda freaked out about it too and mentioned the mess but I was persistent about how much I wanted to be comfortable and no rushing around to make sure we had everything. I hope to do a water birth at my home so theres minimal "mess" but since they take care of it anyway he came around. I really think its about giving him pros and cons and giving him time to think it over.Hopefully he will come around.

  • I had DH watch the Business of being Born with me and had him meet the midwives when I did. He had a list of questions that he asked. Also, he talked to other dads who had a home birth with their wives which made him feel a lot of more comfortable!

Exactly this. I will just add we had an at home water birth last summer and we literally had one bag of trash and my MWs did one load of laundry. It was crazy how little "mess" there actually is. They also recommend making a birth blanket so that you can contain all of the mess and toss in the trash. My hubs came around after meeting with our MWs and fully understanding the process and everyone's role in it. GL!
