XP: How is Your LO in the Car?

Hi All --

My little guy is 7 months old and still has moments of hysteria in the car. What begins as a slight whimper turns into full on hysterical screaming and crying within a few minutes. It seems to boil down to the fact that he doesn't want to be in the carseat. I can only guess this because before we leave home, he's fed and changed. He's not in pain because the moment I take him out of the car seat, he starts playing. I've given him toys to occupy him, we sing songs, and we play little games. But, none of this helps because he eventually goes into crying mode.

This doesn't happen every time we go somewhere, however, its often enough that I'm starting to shy away from taking him anywhere. Are any of you experiencing this? Any ideas for keeping him calm?

Thanks,
Kate

  • Cade didn't like his Infant carrier. We switched to his convertible car seat a few months back and no screaming when driving. He just hates getting into the seat sometimes. He doesnt like his arms and hands being manipulated.

  • Luckily DS is a great car rider, but I noticed he got even better when we switched from the infant bucket seat to a convertible car seat. Not sure which one your son is in, but it's worth a shot! Unfortunately I think there are simply good car riders and bad ones. One of my nieces was terrible until she could forward face, which they didn't do until almost 2 years of age.

  • My 7-month old is horrible in the car.  I dread taking her anywhere.. it's really awful.  She is still in the infant seat, so hopefully we'll do better when we move up to the convertible seat, but she just cries and screams.  As soon as we take her out of the seat she's fine, but it's really stressful whenever I have to drive her somewhere by myself.
  • With DD#1 a convertible seat at 7 months helped a bit. I also put in a DVD play too. Even at 2 years old my DD#2 6 month old is better behaved

  • DD was horrible until we switched to a convertible seat. She would scream nonstop any time we were in the car. She's tiny and would've fit in the infant seat until well over a year, but we switched at 7mo to see if it would help.

  • My niece would scream in the car, turns out she had car sickness. She had to drink ginger ale even on the school bus when she started going to school. I dunno if they have natural ginger drops of anything, but if so that might help.

  • DS is awesome in the car.  I actually just took him on a 10+ hour car ride to visit family this week.  He only starts crying/screaming when he's hungry (although towards the end of the trip he just wanted to get out).  I make sure he's got lots of toys to keep him busy!  Also he loves music, so if I put on some soothing music he calms down (or anything from the 1940s lol)

  • Ugh, this is us to a T...DS hates the carseat.  My first DD hated it but around 4-5 months outgrew the newborn screaming in carseat phase and was a fabulous traveller!  My DS is almost 8 months and still screams in the carseat.  I guess maybe I should try switching to a convertible one.
  • DD hated the car seat or anything that kept her confined. At nearly 3 y/o, she still hates it and is more of a pain in the car than my always-wide-awake 7 m/o. Time has certainly made it better, but it's still not good.

  • We switched our DD to the convertible seat around 7 months hoping it would help.  It didn't, lol.  When she was real little she was good in her seat.  She actually got worse as she got older.  I give her toys and she does a little better.  I think sometimes they just get bored...

  • LO is only like that if he didn't get in enough mommy time right before. For instance, if he has been up for a while and has spent the last 30 minutes or so playing and crawling and no time in my arms he freaks out in the car. So I try to give him my attention and cuddle him for a bit before I put him in the car..
