So I've always loved this name, and it is my Italian great-grandmother's name, the matriarch of the family. I really really want to use it, but I hate the nicknames Chelsea or Tina. We pronounce it CHEL-ess-tee-nuh. Any other suggestions?
I personally like Celeste. It could be a NN I guess for Celestina. I never would have thought to pronounce Celestina with a CH sound. I would have pronounced like Celeste.
Can you forgo a nickname? I mean, at least until she's old enough to express preference.
Celestina is lovely. If you call her Celestina, maybe others will follow suit, and if they don't, you can always correct them (up until she grows up a bit).
I understand this problem though. I love Margaret, as it's a family name, but I hate the nn Maggie. I love Victoria, but hate the nn Vickie, and I'm not a fan of Tori.
I love old Italian names. DH had a relative named Michelina /mick-eh-LEEN-uh/, and I absolutely love it. Celestina is beautiful.
As far as a NN,I guess I'd wait and see what comes naturally. As someone who actively fought using a name with NNs for DD1 (and then ended up using one for her, anyway), sometimes babies just surprise you. I feel like NNs just kind of happen.
Personally, I think Tina is the most intuitive NN, but I also like PP suggestion of Essie. What did your grandmother go by?
Thanks for suggestions, all. I really love Chessa. CiCi is a natural choice but that's my mom's dog's name. Essie is cute, but since my H calls me Jessie, it's kind of matchy.
My g-grandma went by her full name. She was so flippin' awesome; birthed out 8 kids while working the fields in post WWI Italy and then escaped fascism to come to the US. She was the gentlest, kindest woman ever, and I still miss her. I can't believe no on in our family has used the name yet.
I think you can do it and just not call her by that nick name. My nn should be bri and I refuse to respond to anyone who calls me bri! Maybe she will like the nn or you can always call her by her full name.
I had no idea that was how it was pronounced, just looking at it I want to say Celeste-ina (as in celestial). The name reminds me of the character Celestina Warbeck from HP. The problem with choosing a name that has nn potential is that she will likely have her name shortened to the nickname by others occasionally. I think its lovely though.
You know, not every nickname originates from the sound of the child's first name.
My son's name is Timothy. Sure, we do call him Tim sometimes. But the 2 main nicknames I use for him are "Buddy" and "Po."
I call him "Buddy" because, well, he's always been my little buddy!
Po comes from the story "The Elephant's Child." When he was about 3, he LOVED that story, and he would ask me to repeat the line "great, grey, green, greasy Limpopo River" over and over. He just thought that the name "Limpopo River" was hilarious. We called him "Timpopo" for a while, but then we just dropped it and called him "Po." I hope I never feel like he's to big to be called "Po."
Celestina is beautiful. You'll probably wind up calling her "Chell" which is kind of nice!
Celestina is beautiful, I hope you get to use it to honor your g-ma. Maybe Chi-Chi or Chella for a NN? (I personally think Tina is great and underused right now.)
Re: Celestina
I think I love you. So pretty.
What about Chessa? Essa? Essie?
